I’ve been offered a job as SWE2 (level 5?) at Amazon in Seattle. My current title is “Senior Software Developer” being on track to becoming “Staff Software Developer” It feels like SWE2 is a rather poor position with 8-9 years of experience. Want to know more from somebody from Amazon if this is the norm or an exception? Do people get hired for a Level 6 (SE-3) with 8-9 years of experience? Is level negotiable? Should I even care about the job title? Plus I am in Bay Area right now! Not sure if I want to move to Seattle!! 😕
If you care about the money and their package is good then you should go for it. If you are really good then you can get promoted quickly and this should get you even more money
My team has mostly engineers with 6 years of experience. SDE 2s
Dont take it. Try next time and get level 6
Take it
Don't go for sde 2. They are fucking with you. Amazon needs to realize they can't hire senior sdes as sde 2.
Thanks Panda I am inclined to decline but wanted to make sure that m not being a complete idiot!
The level is not negotiable in the offer. Likely you were considered as an SDE III but for some reason didn't meet the bar
Thanks Greens
I am sure I told the HR to interview for a SDE-3 role. Probably what you said makes sense! I should have guessed it when I was interviewed by all SDE-2 and not being asked a single design question!
A friend with 10 years of experience just got SDE3 at Amazon. I agree they probably interviewed you as a 3, but weren't sold so they're just throwing out a level 2 to you. How did you feel about the interview? If you think you could have done a lot better, I'd wait 6-12 months and try again.
I actually felt great! The questions were rather simpler! @LCxj42 I am going to talk to the HR about it! Thanks a lot for the insights!
People with 2yr experience are getting SDE2

L4 Google -> 45 interviews, 5 offers, AMA
Depends but you are getting jibbed!
Eh. That sounds like jumping to conclusions Re "getting jibbed". If you believe you should be offered SDE3, then say so to our recruiter (instead of blind) and ask for another interview. In the scenario where we are making an offer this should be reasonable. Alternatively go to any of FANG and find a commensurate offer eg interview with Facebook and get E5 (~SDE3). Good luck to you if that works out. If you get an E4 (~SDE2) offer then you will figure out the problem is not our interview.
You are absolutely right in that it was a more glib remark than usual. But having seen the hiring/experience bar/practise first hand I am not that off the mark :). Of course AMZN is not the only perpetrator of the low balling so my remark should have been deconstructed as: "Depends" = you must have not met the hiring bar "But you are getting jibbed" = "but you are getting jibbed but no more than anywhere else that has a strong demand amongst employees"
