Currently working as a mid-level Software engineer at Adobe Current TC: 160k MCOL Would moving to a Senior QA Automation Engineer position be worth it? TC: 290k bay area Apple would pay significantly more -- even after the COL adjustment. However, I'd be coding tests and testing platforms rather than the products themselves. Would making this move potentially hurt my career? Is this a good idea? My current guess is that I'd be in this position for 2-4 years. #tech @Adobe @Apple
Try asking more comp at Adobe. Better comp can be secured, but a good WLB and work environment cannot.
Don’t even think about it. Not worth joining Apple in this role. Just apply for SWE roles.
Apple has one offer policy. I don't think I could. If I reject the offer, I might have to wait 6 months (or risk burning a bridge?)
Just apply for SWE roles. There’s no such policy.Every team is different. You can say you wanted a SWE role.
Do you have good WLB at Adobe?
Yes, very good wlb
If that’s the case, I wouldn’t mess with that to become a QA engineer and move to a very HCOL. The market will turn around eventually. Once that happens, you will have opportunities to get higher TC without the need to move.
I’ve read before that it’s tough to escape QA roles once you’re in ‘em, so that’s a factor to consider.
Definitely scary. I would really miss feature / product development :(
I would do it. Depends what your priorities are. But you can always transfer internally within apple. I’ve weaved from product -> qa -> back to product at different companies for better pay/wlb. Also as a senior you may be building testing platform infra
More building infra than writing test cases is my guess/personal experience at a different faang company
At Apple, most automation engineers are stuck doing manual testing for most of the time and internal transfers are almost impossible from qa to dev in 99.9% of cases
You should. Get your foot in the door and move to a more desirable position. Just be sure and do _well_ in the initial position.
In my perspective better TC is the way. U will not have career in Adobe, don’t know how it in apple but in Adobe careers perspectives works only if u are professional ass licker, but if u are professional engineer that is dead end
Things aren’t much different at Apple especially as a QA engineer. Not much career growth. Best case scenario become a QA manager, otherwise stuck at ICT forever.
Nope. Don’t do QA at Apple even for higher TC. Others saying about automation engineer end up doing lot of manual testing is true. IMO QA is one of the worst position to get into Apple at SWE right after screeners and integrators. QA roles at Apple especially at SWE has really shitty WLB so take that into your consideration as well.
Does this also apply if one is working on testing infra?
QA automation at Apple might not be bad but it's totally team dependent. I would try to figure out day to day responsibilities and determine how much of it is automated vs manual. Other things to consider is you'll be moving from MCOL TO HCOL so that's something to factor in for the TC How many total YOE do you have? Is this for a ICT4 position? What's the TC breakdown?
I have 3 yoe. ICT4 position Base - 190, Bonus - 10%, RSU - 300/4

Who are these retards asking for dictatorship in India?
Blind will suggest to take a higher TC even if the company and environment is toxic In your case, more than likely wlb will be better for higher pay at a stable company. You should.
Just to clarify, I should move from Adobe to Apple? Both companies (I know Apple is very team-dependant) seem really good. My team at Adobe is solid with WLB. Adobe's TC just is lower and I'm going to be running out of RSU in the next year.
