Software engineer to devops?

Hi I've been working as a software engineer for several years. A company reached out to interview me for a devops role but I don't really know what that means. It's a super cool company but I'm not sure if moving from software engineering is a good thing? When i asked what they are looking for they said they want someone who is a software engineer but it's still a devops role..

If your title is still software engineer, go for it if you like automation and dealing with deployment and operational issues. If your title is ops engineer, be careful.

I was an Ops Engineer at VMware and it was the same as devops

why be careful?

They want someone who knows good enough python/go etc to cram some sensu jobs or create an in-house console/dashboard probably. Not all devops are skilled in code. So you will code tools and utilities, collect metrics and be on pagerduty so that you will wake up with an alarm 3am in the morning, too. So it’s probably less yaml/ansible/terraform/cloudformation, and more python/golanf/ruby/sensu/kibana… with a hint of pagerduty once a week. That’s my guesstimate of course: I would ask the recruiter for further clarification.

Wow thanks! I will definitely do that. I still am not totally sure what they're looking for

devops = sys admin with some scripting skills
