For the big companies out there with offices in NYC, are these software engineering openings more competitive to get into than their HQs in the valley? Or is there a difference at all?
From what I've seen yes, e.g. Google doesn't give signing bonuses to new grads in NYC. Also most are looking for more senior engineers
From my interview experience at Amazon NYC, I think it's true for Amazon as well
Amazon's interview bar is consistently high across the board, did you interview in Seattle to have a direct comparison? I've worked with teams in nyc and Seattle and found the west coast teams to have stronger engineers (though small sample size). One theory for the perceived higher bar is east coast companies are mainly finance, pharma and gov't/consulting while west coast companies are mainly large internet companies and startups. It could just be the majority of candidates coming from those types of roles lack experience in designing scalable web services. I'd like to hear if people on the west coast at web startups are finding a similar issue in nyc?
From what I heard yes. For Yahoo definitely yes
