Some thoughts on Tesla

I finally get to try a Tesla Model 3. It knew how to self-drive (beta). The salesperson said he cannot let us try it, but I said, that is exactly the thing I wanted to try and he turned on that "steering (beta)" thing... not sure if he is supposed to let us try, but he did turn it on for me. It costs US$12,000 to buy, or US$200 per month to subscribe. So it went on the freeway, but after a mile or so, it gave some sound and said on the screen, something like: cannot self drive from this point on. I didn't know what the reason was. The salesperson for some reason said he cannot be with me in the car. That I need to learn most of it and then be alone in the car while test driving. I asked what if it is some 50 or 55 year old lady, they will tell you they can't learn all that in 5 minutes and need you to be with her. He just said... he was not allowed to be in the car or he'd lose his job. He also told me, you can step on the brake, or turn the steering wheel, and it'd dis-engage self-driving. To put it back on, double tap the TURN RIGHT signal and it will self drive again. He said, after 5 times of dis-engaging, then it can't self drive any more. You have to end the trip, and then enter the address again to start a new "self drive". I said well, if there are small kids nearby, or I need to stop a little to see something, so I dis-engaged it for 5 times, I actually need to enter the address again? He said yes. I said that'd be dangerous. He said, you basically need to pull over to the side of the road and do it there. I said, there is no way that you triple tap or something, so then it will continue the trip and self drive? He said no. I said, I will tweet to Elon. I also noticed it was a bit aggressive. Like I am on the fast lane and merging with the slow lane (two lanes merging into one), but the slow lane has a car in front of me... so if it is my driving style, I will yield to that car. But the self-driving mechanism actually accelerated and then went past the other car. I was a bit worried that the other car would "merge sooner" and go to the center of the merged lane and hit my car... it was a bit scary. Like an amusement park ride. That driving style is probably called "Elon's style of chasing women". Also, if I use Bard, it says Waymo has the most mileage tested, so what does that mean? Waymo can drive better than Tesla? Is Tesla the second best? What about Zoox or ... Apple car... probably nobody knows about Apple Car or I wonder what happens if their cars are on the road and people follow and video cam their interior and look at their software and system and screen, will they shoot a laser beam to destroy your phone and car. (by the way, some people posted their Waymo experience on YouTube: Driverless 20-minutes-long Ride With Waymo in San Francisco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27HL7ofBa1w TV journalist documents wild ride inside Waymo self-driving car in San Francisco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Rxvl3INKSg Are driverless cars ready to hit the road full time? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q01PqUubacA Waymo vs Tesla in San Francisco: Same start and end point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDw4F1R58T0 ) Which company's self-driving is the most hopeful?

it was during the "triple tap" bit.

My god , this is the worst writing I have read . Infants might write better, if they could . OP - please focus on your writing skills . It’s vital to be able to communicate in todays world without sounding like babbling moron .

If you like self driving systems that constantly try to run red lights, go with Tesla

Apple energyuniv OP Sep 15, 2023

the funny thing was, from Tesla demo center to the main road, the car wants to turn left. But it can't sense the left and right traffic so well. The salesperson said the car may end up not moving at all. So he told me to step on the brake and then turn the steering wheel to override the self-driving. I feel I can see well, and there probably are 12 sensors on the car and it can't see well? Oh well... Oh wait... you work at Tesla?

Tesla hhjsks Sep 15, 2023

Not for much longer...

You got all wrong info.

I didn't read the full novel, but you put different things in the same pot. Waymo/Cruise/Zoox/Motional prio 1 is selling a taxi service. It means the customer _cannot go behind the wheel_. No matter what. It goes over all the rest, especially restricting where you can travel. Waymo and Cruise are definitely the most "hopeful" (to reuse your term) in that category. Tesla (and all other car makers - maybe also Apple based on rumors) prio 1 is selling a car to an individual. They won't support more autonomy if it prevents them from selling the car. Ex. If they tell you I sell you a car but you can't use it in the city, then it kills the business. Different priority. In that domain the most "hopeful" are Tesla, MobileEye, Nvidia.

can't Waymo just team up with Toyota or Honda and then roll out self driving cars to the consumers? If they got the tech, then they can plug it into any service or products as they wish

Argo AI kyDy80 Sep 16, 2023

Once the tech is ready that could work. But for now Waymo and co are at a level of reliability that is way too low to put the tech in a passenger car. There are multiple reasons to this. I can elaborate if you're interested. But in short it's not that simple. At least not today with the current state of tech.
