Folks working in SoCal, where do you work and where do you live? Do you like it there or would you prefer Bay? Looking for software engineering options in SoCal without taking a hit on TC. TC: 275K YOE: 4
The jobs pay much less and everything is healthcare. Might make sense if your spouse is involved in healthcare, but for you alone it isn’t good.
Qualcomm and Apple in San Diego. They may be specialized to certain specific domain. Amazon has good presence in Irvine , and LA.
Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Zillow are in Irvine. Google, Snap, Airbnb, Hulu, and Facebook (very small office) are in LA. Amazon and Google (very small office) are in San Diego.
Google Playa Vista and Venice are considerably bigger than Irvine. Also, Google is building massive new campus in LA.
Should mention Irvine’s food is ridiculously good
The options are Google, Amazon, Snap, Tinder. I think that's it.
They have Microsoft as well
It seems very few employees are there, most of the work happens in Redmond
Well there's tons of open jobs in the bay while the one's in socal seem to disappear the moment they appear. It's almost like people enjoy living near arts, surf, and entertainment, and not next to miles of greasy tech bros
Lots of video game studios in SoCal if that’s you’re thing. Great cultures and people, big TC hit though.
That TC hit is working at a video game studio.
TC: 110K, Location: LA, YOE: 7 yrs- I concur that TC and job options are not at all great here- understand this after some years being in LA.
You need to LC and find something new. You could upgrade that TC by at least 20% pretty easily. Likely much more than that.
I work in LA and have TC > 230K for a small company. There’s no shortage of opportunities here.
SoCal living is great!
Career is the only negative of Socal. They don't pay to match the living expense at all
Career I agree. Harder to level up. Pay is quite good actually. For L3 and L4 pay is just like 10k less than Bay Area for Google and Amazon.
It’s possible to get pay pretty close to Bay Area levels in LA. Just a little harder overall but it’s improving rapidly.
SoCal sucks. Career suicide if u are a TC chasing SWE already in Bay Area.
Awesome for other things though. Living life in SoCal is so much better
You’re totally right! Please stay in SF, keep working in atlassian, enjoy shitty weather, stepping on human feces and chances to get stabbed. People working in Google, FB (Oculus), Amazon, Airbnb, Microsoft in SoCal are totally miserable.
