SpaceX - Getting Top-secret clearance (or other kind)

Anyone at SpaceX know of opportunities to get a clearance thru your job? I know SpaceX is about to hire a lot of new folks for Starshield and will ask for TS clearance, and the only way to get that clearance is thru an employer sort of "sponsoring" you to go thru the process, right? Just wondering how easy that would be for someone already at SpaceX in a non-clearance role, to find another internal role to switch to and get SpaceX to sponsor your acquiring a clearance in order for you to start that new job. #spacex #starshield #topsecret #clearance

Yes, the only way to get a clearance is if it's required for your job and facilitated by a sponsoring agency. I'd imagine you would have to apply internally to the position, but the easiest and fastest option is for SpaceX to hire people who already hold a clearance. The investigation period is typically quite long (over a year in most situations) and SpaceX isn't know for waiting around for things...

You can get interim clearance relatively quickly. By relative I mean relative. Still would take ~3 months.

True in some cases, but it varies quite a bit depending on the program. Some sponsoring agencies do not allow interim clearances at all, particularly if it's related to SAPs which is where I expect some of the scope of Starshield will land.

Can't you get Boeing to get you TS? I'd imagine you would have enough projects requiring TS and TS poly? I think the only places that will do that are shops like Boeing Raytheon Lockheed. Your best bet is to convince your BU to apply it for you. That's gonna take time, but I'm sure you know that already. I'm assuming you have at least Secret right now, given you are at Boeing.

And no, not that many jobs at Boeing require any kind of clearance (obviously a lot of BDS defense related employees require it, but they are a relatively small portion of our workforce). So I don't really know many folks at Boeing that have it.

You can get a TS clearance by joining the National Guard and choosing a job that requires one.

Secret and TS don’t require an active contract as long as the company has a facility clearance (and SpaceX most likely has that). The clearance is then held by the company. It’s TS/SCI that requires placement on a government contract and you utilizing a billet on it (and the agency sponsors/holds it).

Holding a clearance will not help you land a technical role at SpaceX. Also, Starshield does not ask for folks to hold a clearance as a prerequisite for hiring, but you have to be a US citizen.
