Over the the last six years, I’ve worked as a tech recruiter for a staffing agency, Google, and now Microsoft. Three weeks ago, I declined a low-ball offer from Meta. SpaceX posted a job recently for a senior opening that looked like a good match for my skillset so I decided to fill out an application. As I was applying, they asked for my GPA, something I am deeply ashamed of. Even though I finished college, I have ADHD and struggled tremendously in school. My entire life I felt like an idiot until the day I got the job Google. Ever since that day, I’ve been flying at a different altitude. Google did a study on workforce development that found no correlation between GPA and success at Google 2+ years out of college. SpaceX probably wouldn’t even care about my experience or degree the minute I select “below 3.0.” It doesn’t even matter that I have a bachelor’s degree at all. Even if they did, does this mean I would have to ask candidates such a shitty question while recruiting for them? That’ll make my job easier! TC: 135k @neurodiversity @gpa @adhd
Why would gpa matter for tech recruiter? None of the courses you take in school teach you about recruiting
Seriously! No one goes to school to become a recruiter. Everyone I know fell into it somehow.
GPA measures your ability to do boring work. I had an average GPA, so this is painful for me to say too
Think I know how you feel, while I don't have ADHD, I've struggled with depression my entire life, including several episodes of major depression. I have also often felt ostracized due to symptoms. There are no accommodations for it, only drugs. I've spent decades on drugs to be more like everyone else. I finally got off them about six years ago, and am still productive.
Now, Elon will remove that GPA requirement to gain some social media points.
Then he will start a new company to fix technical recruiter hiring. All that while he once again pumps DOGE.
He already did that. He said college doesn't matter but the whole reason this is still asked is Elon. No hiring manager gives a crap, apart from maybe an intern hire
First, thought this is a troll. Searched "GPA SpaceX" and saw a ton of hits since 5-6 years ago. Elon's gonna make profit out this somehow
Check the LinkedIn postings right now before he changed them! They’re there!
Lol remember when Elon said he didn’t care about college degrees and grades?
I didn’t even know he said that but I’m not surprised 🤣
I think he did say he thought college was useful as a measure of following through on work/commitment, but he didn't care about the content of the education. It shows how well you can do chores but not much more.
What if someone's education is not in the US, or is measured using a different system? For example I graduated from a German university with a GPA of 1.3 which translates to "Excellent with high honors". Unless this screenshot is for an internship, it is very odd to ask about GPA and SAT scores.
Sr. Software Engineer SpaceX posting on the official careers page: https://boards.greenhouse.io/spacex/jobs/5950106002?gh_jid=5950106002 Scroll down to "Education Information Confirmation" section 🤣
You can’t work for spacex if you’re not american because of some security rule
Go for it! They don’t care
Hell no! I don’t need them. Hell with that 🤣
I had a 1.9 GPA in highshool - now I'm getting paid about 8K per 10th of a GPA point
don’t fill out that part. or better yet, just own it. no one cares once u have some yoes under you. you shouldn’t feel ashamed of it
Nah. Market is too good right now. If I was desperate I would fill it out but it feels too good to tell a big company to shove it while I still can.
Lol they’re really gonna be upset you didn’t apply /s
It’s just a job, plenty of other companies to work for. Relax.
There’s more to this post than just the job at SpaceX. If you make an effort to read more than just a headline, you might learn something occasionally.
Oof. I actually took the time to read. It’s just GPA. It’s life, don’t get too butthurt over it. At the end of the day, it’s just a job.
