Got a job offer for a Senior SWE position and want some outside perspectives. Current Role: Energy Sector $160K salary Fully WFH SpaceX offer: $180k salary + 200k RSU 90 minute commute (one way) Must be in office for full work week.
I would never take on that commute for that level of salary increase. That much commute will drastically impact your quality of life.
Is that 200k over 4 years? I personally wouldn't for the commute. That being said you will work long hours so the commute will be shorter on the way back home ;)
Over 5 I think
Got it, join if problem space is a perfect fit and you don't mind the commute and long hours
Agree with others, you’d need to relocate to take this role. 90 minutes each way is unimageanable.
Cushy wfh job or soul crushing elon company with 3 hrs commute? Easy decision my dude. Maybe if they doubled your TC it would be worth considering.
Depends it could be epic for a few years. But I'd move closer. Don't do it for the money it's not enough. If you do it it should be for the experience.
I lived near SpaceX redmond office for few years, many employees were at work at 6, 6.30 am and a big number of them were still at work by even 8, 9 pm every day. There were large number of them at work on weekends as well. Not sure if it is still the same, left that neighborhood 2 years ago, but it didn't seem that SpaceX offered good wlb.
Same in Hawthorne office as well afaik
There is not a single swe at the Redmond office who is working those hours. I'd say that 9:30am to 6:30pm is pretty typical.
Pay a driver 50k per year to take you to and from work. Net 170k. Profit.
You should take it if you can relocate, decline if you can't.
Take it if you’re able to relocate, the work will be cooler but the commute will be very tiring and not worth it, speaking as someone who quit after one month of a 1.5 hr commute
3 hours in a car everyday for the foreseeable me future is worth a lot more than $20k and some uncertain RSU's. Id say no assuming relocation is out of the question. But SpaceX is hella cool. If you feel your passion for the work might let you thrive, then do what it takes.
