Back in 2007, I cut the proverbial cable cord and went 100% streaming. At first it was just Netflix then quickly after Hulu. Saved plenty of money and it worked… for a while anyway. Netflix was such as success that I knew back in 2008, this wasn’t going to last and eventually everyone and everything would be streamed. And you’d have to subscribe to a dozen (I jest) different services if you wanted access to said content in addition to Netflix and Hulu as the content owners would restrict their content and create their own platforms to compete. I knew once that day comes, streaming would get out of hand. There are more than 200 streaming services worldwide and streaming takes the bulk of the market at 38% with cable in second at 30% viewers. In the US that market is even bigger with 83% of households subscribing to at least one streaming service. 93% of households stated that they intend to either maintain or INCREASE their subscriptions. I’m starting to consider switching back to cable (satellite) as I find it cheaper unless I want to play the streaming shuffle game by constantly switching between services to watch the shows/movies we want. I started streaming to reduce cost and get more bang for my buck. But the cost is too quickly adding up. At an average of $15/month: Netflix - $23 Disney/Hulu/ESPN - $76 Peacock - $12 Paramount+ - $6 Max - $20 Starz - $10 Showtime - $12 Total monthly is $160 and I’m sure I’m forgetting something. Amazon Prime doesn’t count because the streaming comes with it. I have a large family so need content for all ages and everything. That is twice what I was paying for cable back in 2007. With cable today I can get just as much if not more for less. For $160/mo I can get EVERYTHING including local channels , and premium channels like Max, Showtime, etc. These network idiots all thought they could become Netflix or Hulu. So they pull off their content and spend Billions to stream their crap at a similar price as Netflix. Netflix content takes a dump and people get to shell out more money for a fractured and piecemeal approach to content. You can call it a la cart if you’d like, but it’s not. I cannot just pay for Yellowstone on Peacock, etc. that would be a la cart. How much do you spend per month on streaming services.
What cable do you have that is that cheap? It was always over $200 for me with everything you listed. Remember they add a bunch of fees to cable bills so the total cost is much higher. When I had directv and RCN the fees were like $30 alone
Honestly, I get 1-2 services and pirate the rest.
Uhhh why pay when you can easily get everything for free
me and like 3 other households share plans and split the costs so it’s like 40/ea maybe less
also i will *never* pay for a service that uses ads
Max free with At&t fiber. Peacock free with Xfinity Disney: $2 through Disney Hotstar ( India) + vpn Netflix: $23 Total: $25
You need add the vpn charges as well
Vpn is $30 (one time) for lifetime and has been using for 5 years already
I rotate services and typically at least one I’m using is still on some promotional period pricing. I actually enjoy it. I took about a 5 year break from Netflix and just signed up again, it now feels full of new content. I’ll likely keep a few months and then drop (while there’s lots of new content most of it is pretty bad). Also have Hulu, Peacock, and HBO. I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 4 concurrently.
My family pays for Netflix and I pay for Crunchyroll. Those are the only two streaming services I have. Everything else I just obtain via pirating
I'm not sure how long live TV will last. market share has declined quite a bit. Sports was the last moat for Live TV. Now sports broadcasters are pulling stuff off live tv and making it exclusive to their apps or dazn. I'm not sure if this is happening with other live content but subscribers are declining.
