Who's fault is it that this isn't happening? Some suggested its a pride thing for Spotify. Not sure how this makes sense. People would still be using Spotify just on a different device. They would still use the full app to manage playlists. Some say its a technical thing. Clearly false as Apple can do it. Some say Apple is disallowing Spotify. Surely this is an antitrust issue?
The same could be said about Apple TV.
It might make me switch to apple music
Wait, you can't use Spotify on Watch 3? What.the.fuck. That was the primary reason I was going to switch since I don't want to carry my phone around at the gym or running/biking. I'll probably switch to Apple Music then too... damnit
Given how buggy Spotify is with CarPlay I reckon it's incompetence on their end.
The Watch is still not a completely mature product. They’re iterating it to get it to where it needs to be. LTE is a huge step in setting it free and making it an independent product. While they iterate, they’re happy to lock the product in because there’s plenty of customers in the Apple ecosystem who will buy the Watch. That’s a reasonable position to hold. Apple didn’t even know how the first Watch would be received. It’s evident in how the marketing changed to focus in on the fitness and health segment from the 2nd generation onwards. They put the series 0 out in the wild, collected feedback and made a more focused product in the 2nd gen. They’re continuing that with series 3. I think in due time the Watch will grow up and have better platform level support for third parties. The APIs will mature and the ecosystem will build on itself to get us to a product that stands on it’s own. Greatness takes time and focus. Spotify and other third party integrations aren’t important right now for Apple. What’s important is finding out what the right product to make is and I think they’re close.
Yep. Agree. But Spotify could do just playlists. No search etc. Sync, select and play a playlist created on phone. Something minimal. Phase 0.
I and many other watch users I know don't give a shit about the fitness features at all. I want this thing to free me from need to be near my phone and enable me to do phone stuff when my phone runs out of batteries.
Does iTunes or TuneIn or iHeartRadio work? What's special about Spotify?
Dammit Apple!
The Watch is not yet a mature product, just as Halos mentioned. Let me put it to you this way: the Watch needs a compelling reason to allow itself to minimize computing. If you look at a task-based ecosystem, you want to focus on the object you’re working on, rather than using the device itself. The Watch aims to minimize interactions, allowing you to experience what’s at the forefront. We’re still in our phase of mobile device computing. Apple can’t shift sales away from iPhone yet. The productivity and profit is not quite there with the Watch. It’ll take a paradigmatic shift, something that might even be augmented by brain-wave controls or spooky scifi Black Mirror devices. iPhone is too profitable to cause developments to move toward the Watch.
Typical Apple... Who cares what your customers want, or how they want to use a product.
Apple does this with their biggest partners all the time. They'll make some compatibility changes with a new version that will take the partner forever to implement. Meanwhile, Apples competing product will be compatible already. A little while later, after user complaints, Apple will go out of their way to help the partner integrate. I've seen Apple do this multiple times with Mac and iOS products.
Can you give one specific example?
Watch numbers are still minuscule
You can't use Spotify on an Apple Watch?
