Square seems to have top review rating (4.4) among tech companies on Blind. How accurate this is? The total number of reviews is only ~76 though. Is it more kool-aid talking? The TC offered by Square doesn’t seem to be very good, still its compensation rating is better then Uber and other pay masters. Even Facebook has lower rating. Can Square people chime in?
Hi I interviewed / got an offer there about 9 months ago. I can say that the people who interviewed me were all REALLY nice and seemed super genuine / smart. Square was the best interview process I have been through and I think you should 100% consider them if you are thinking about interviewing / joining. Obviously not from square but just from my interactions the people there are awesome
Thanks. Why did you not join square?
It was a very difficult decision but I personally thought Instacart was closish to an IPO at that time and wanted to live through a company going public. I was lucky and couldn’t have gone wrong :)
From what I've heard, Square is a fantastic place to be at: industry, pay, culture, growth, everything.
I interviewed with Square and did well but didn’t get an offer. The interviewers were all super nice and smart. The manager was very genuine. TC was better than my current TC. I’d say Square and Stripe are good places to join today. Like, within 3 months. After that they’ll still be at least good, not sure if the best to join.
Why 3 mos? Square is already public right
Well square’s compensation score is low but the rest if the factors bump up its aggregate score, so youre right pay isnt amazing there. Everything else they seem to be doing right
I’ve heard comp is lower than FANG, but nearly all other aspects easily make up for it. Fantastic place to work.
Thx. How is the attrition? Is it as bad as Twitter? And how are perf reviews? Are they as harsh/aggressive as FB/Amzn, where they tend to PIP 5% every year.
Attrition is very low from my vantage point, which is probably impacted by our strong stock performance. Performance reviews are fair and pretty thorough. I haven’t worked at FB/Amzn but I don’t think we PIP anywhere near that rate. It’s a great company with several lines of business that are simultaneously doing very well. People are generally happy and work life balance is good on most teams.
Best place I’ve ever worked by a mile. Comp is about what I was offered/made at a couple FAANGMULLAs. Culture is light years better.
Care to share square’s culture in detail?
High transparency, no “core values” bullshit. Square understands how to use austerity in a pragmatic way. Pay is great, leadership actually practices empathy. Sure, there are challenges but not unlike other companies.
I'm very happy here. I don't know what the comp will be like going forward, or if you're joining now, but it's hard to complain with what's happened this year. I like my team a lot, I like the people I work with, and I've been at two other FAANGMULA companies and a handful of startups and I've never had this much success advocating for what I want to do and talking to senior leadership about it. And they've been super supportive during the pandemic and very reasonable about WLB. Feel free to DM if you want more details
I love Square and blessed to be here. The work is great, I’m on a high impact team with great people. Work life balance is ideal, the company is now fully remote and the stock has 5x since I signed on so my TC is multiples of what it was originally. If you have an offer from Square take it, we’re just beginning.
Thx. This is helpful. The initial offer (l6+) seems low though. Lower than my current TC, (if include all benefits) and way lower than the data available online. Not sure if this is recent phenomenon, if Square rolling out low ball offers. Do they expect candidate to heavily negotiate?
What is the offer?
I like it here. Good people, chill environment but still work on interesting problems. Can’t speak to pay because frankly the stock growth has crushed all expectations and taken TC with it. I know we struggle hiring at lower levels due to comp though

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Moneywise... have you seen their stock performance? With growth like this base is irrelevant.
I understand. Though, it is hard to predict, but given that the stock has already appreciated a lot, it may have lesser upside, then say last year? I am not sure if people at Square are including the potential upside in their compensation rating.
People are writing reviews based on their past experiences with work and with comp. And their experiences happen to be positive on both accounts.
