Has anyone had this happen to them before? I have two competing offers so I wanted to update the recruiter with my status. Square said they won’t be able to beat that so they rescinded the offer before even going to the comp team. I guess this means I negotiated the other offers well… but I didn’t think things like this actually happened during negotiations lol. Guess there’s always a risk. I can give other numbers in DMs. My current TC is $193k / yr, L4 here.
What does rescinded mean to you? Did they formally extend an offer letter or did they merely indicate that they are interested in making an offer?
Verbal confirmation only, no numbers
It is not “rescinded” then. A hiring manager’s goal is to bring someone on board for the role they have open, if your competing offers were way beyond their range they may have merely chosen to move forward with other candidates. Generating offer letters takes time, over a dozen or so approvals, why go through it when you know there is a mismatch in expectation? If you play your cards well, you could keep the dialog open so you can accept their offer even if it is lower than your expectations. Please realize that hiring is not a hobby where one collects a bunch of “offers” to flaunt their worth, you interview with multiple companies to figure out what’s best for you and negotiate the best pay at the place you plan to join. If you are not super excited about Square’s numbers, move on. They are known to low ball, they did that to me few years back.
Happens everywhere. Had the same thing happen to me at Google years ago. Recruiter said HC approved and asked for comp expectations. I shared my other offers. 4 hours later rejected by email
Damn negotiation is riskier than what people claim
Not really. My guess is they were nowhere in the ballpark of my offers. I wouldn’t have joined G anyways at anything lower. My issue wasn’t that they rescinded the offer, but via email they said that I wasn’t a match for the level.
What were the offers? Which competing companies?
Implicitly when you give rival offer numbers you're saying 'give me this or I walk'. They know the bands, if they can't they can't.
That’s true, I was trying to approach it from “here is what they offered but I’m still really interested in working at square so I’m willing to compromise”
I would still hope the recruiter(irrespective of the company) says here is the max we can offer instead of rescinding given they have passed the hiring bar. People ultimately make the decision not just purely based off tc.
If u don’t post the numbers we won’t know if they withdrew their offer reasonably. If u asked for something crazy it’s reasonable they would withdraw it
Whatever crazy numbers be, it was from an offer and not just an ask/expectation. That is by definition the market value
I don’t want to identify myself too much, open to DMing people. but it wasn’t really crazy, it was a company with comp very similar to square and a culture very similar to square. I thought square could at least match
Square and competing numbers? Why dm for that ?
Guess I’m just paranoid, I know recruiters use this app a bunch I’m not trying to bad mouth anyone just wanted to warn others who negotiate
What was the original offer and how much did you try to negotiate?
Apparently Square doesnt negotiate? they called me and recruited gave me numbers upfront even before interviewing.. I said they were too low and we parted ways ..lol
What was the tc and level?
How was the interview process though?
Very nice overall, thought the interviewers were really cool and welcoming. 10/10 would do again It does take awhile tho
Isn’t there only like one phone screen and one on-site with 4-5 rounds tho?
Wow, note to self, don’t apply to square.
