Hi Everyone, I'm new to blind. I'd like to get some thoughts and inputs on these 3 offers (haven't negotiated yet). Which would you recommend? They're all entry level and in NYC. I probably only plan on working in next role for 2.5 yrs. I need to decide within a week. I'd greatly appreciate it! Squarespace Data Analyst - TC 150k DSS Assoc Data Analyst - TC 137k Etsy Data Scientist, Product Analytics (lowest lvl) - TC 134k Current TC: 0 YOE: 1 #tech #squarespace #etsy #disneystreamingservices #dss #disneystreaming #comp #offers #offer #datascience #dataanalyst #data #compensation #dataanalytics #entrylevel #nyc
Money is a big motivator but SquareSpace also has really good benefits like 100% insurance coverage by employer. Not sure about Etsy or Disney
Gotcha!
According to Built in NYC, Etsy also has fully covered medical premiums. That’s pretty common at most companies these days. Squarespace also has some poor benefits. They offered hardly any assistance during lockdown when other companies offered generous stipends. They were such extreme cheapskates about reimbursing for home office equipment that they were denying simple requests for webcams and extra headphones, and making people escalate to very senior managers and argue for tiny reimbursements. They still haven’t clarified remote work options or explained details of how the office return will work (only a month away). Squarespace vesting & 401k also aren’t great. They do backloaded stock vesting (only 15% in the first year) and it requires waiting 3 months before new hires are eligible for the 401k. I think Squarespace projects an image of good benefits that’s not really true. Is it better than Disney? Yes, of course. But it’s no better, and often worse, than any other “real” tech or software company, Etsy included.
If you want to grow in a company with good data culture, Disney is not the company to join. Data analyst here is all about excel and how to BS well to exec and stakeholders. It is not data first company and the data team work on useless stuff. Among those three, Etsy culture is the best when it comes to growing in data analytics field. Join tech company, not a corp like Disney. Do you already work for DSS?
I see, thanks for letting me know. I interned there half a year ago. Wasn't in Data org. The role would be in churn analytics team. Heard they have their own python repo.
Whats your skills set like? What do you want to do as a data analyst?
Former Etsy employee. Etsy pay is mediocre but the culture is way better than SS so negotiate them up as much as you can. DS at Etsy is very well respected.
Gotcha thanks for lmk
👋🏻Squarespace data team member here (but previously on the sqsp mobile team). Squarespace culture is messed up - hard/smart work does not get rewarded and politics are more important. Comp and benefits are also low… there has been penny pinching from leadership going on for the past 2 years: our health plans are getting worse (higher deductible, increased copay, and monthly premiums), reduced expense allotments, no WFH stipend, free lunch potentially permanently going away once we return back to the office, etc. The list goes on. Promotion and refreshers also suck - each time I was promoted here, it was about a 10% change. Try to negotiate with Etsy to match the sqsp offer and take Etsy.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard SS has 0 cost health care covered entirely by the company?
It used to be zero cost for everyone, but now it’s free for just yourself (e.g. you pay a premium to add your spouse). They also worsened some aspects/benefits of the plan. Also, in the upcoming open enrollment cycle, there’s rumors that we will be moving to a multi-plan scheme, where the company will be offering a reduced plan (higher deductible, copays, etc) for free, but you will have to pay $$ in order to continue on our current plan (even if you’re electing it only for yourself).
I can vouch for Etsy culture. Management has been fantastic, there’s a huge push right now to help juniors grow and focus on what you want to work on, not just what the company needs you to work on. There’s tons of room to pick your own projects if you have interest in a specific area. We’re also upping some perks- free food in office everyday once we open, increased budget for expensing stuff, and increased stock compensation. My only complain is low base salary/ lower TC compared to other tech companies, but the work and people have been A++
Hahaha the changes you mentioned Etsy is making are in the exact opposite direction of Squarespace’s. We are “re-evaluating” our free food in the office program, decreasing expense budget, and decreasing stock portion of comp now that we are public/liquid.
any update ?
How was your square space interview?
I've been at or familiar with all 3 companies. Definitely Etsy is the way to go. Disney Streaming: Very interesting problem. But there's so much tech debt at the data engineering, BI level that you won't be able to do anything fun. You'll be doing basic BI most of the time for execs. Etsy: Fantastic leadership, decent data org, good culture. Stock still has upside. Squarespace: This is a brand driven org, leader manages via personality. Generally not the ingredients for enjoyment as a data person.
If you can negotiate Etsy up, I’d say really consider going there instead, even if TC is slightly lower. Squarespace is not a good place to join right now, and analytics / data roles are among the worst to take.
I see, why is that for Squarespace? This particular role would be in Analytics for Customer Operations, which I believe is relatively new in squarespace. Any thoughts on DSS?
Customer Operations is one of the better run parts of the company, so that makes it a potentially better role than I thought based on the title. Any kind of data / analysis role is not taken seriously by the main product or ops teams though. They have poor data practices but act superior to data requests or considerations. It leads to politics, inaccessible data messes, constantly changing projects and high turnover.
