After my entry level -> mid promo early career, I have never been promo’d again. But I’m now “Sr” (not at Amzn) due to job hopping. And I’ve known staff level ppl who also got there from hopping companies. Probably happens to ex-Amzn especially because Mid->Sr at Amzn is a chokehold that most won’t get past. I heard 1 of the head honchos at OCI was an Amzn mid when he went there as VP or something. If you got to Sr / Staff via hops and not internal promo, did you have any trouble, compared to your peers who were promo’d? I’m only now starting to learn about the beyond-mid level skills of looking for your own shit to do instead of waiting for assignments, influencing other teams, etc. And so I haven’t been doing that like ever lol, and very likely will fall on my face. Do demotions happen much? TC 400k
prolly still the same situation today re: sde2 I didn’t mean that the title was the big deal but the difference in the job. Entry & mid aren’t that different. But mid to senior/staff is more of a job change especially at staff. Sr at some companies is just a more experienced mid but at others, it’s a tech lead.
I'm on the same boat. I am (was) an L5 at Amazon and I'll join Atlassian as P6 (principal) late Nov.
Can I DM you for interview process?
what are the expectations for P6? same as Amzn L6?
I was Senior SDE (L6) at Amazon and jumped to L6 at Snap, which is very much Staff level here. Honestly the role isn't too different from what I was doing at Amazon since I was L6 there for years and acted as a tech lead for multiple teams. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't have a level that properly maps to staff so L6 is very bloated there. (Amazon L6 could definitely be split into two levels, but they never will because it's a logistical nightmare)
How many teams/devs are Atlassian principals responsible of?
If you care about titles then join a bank. You’ll be a VP or a director easily. And no, you don’t get demoted, you just get let go or put on PIP
