Stack overflow lays off 28% of its workforce

https://stackoverflow.blog/2023/10/16/stack-overflow-company-announcement-october-2023/ “Unfortunately, those changes were not enough and we have made the extremely difficult decision to reduce the company’s headcount by approximately 28%.” Looks like we are starting to see AI impact.

Most of their staff don’t work on the main site.

ChatGPT is not magic. It needs stack overflow data to be able to answer questions. It’s a race to the bottom if stack overflow and human responses to questions ever died off from ChatGPT

Stack Overflow has a lot of staff in recruiting related roles and also have been trying to build a product that would work inside companies. These are expensive and slow to grow it seems. They realized years ago that the thing programmers see wouldn’t generate money so they tried a whole bunch of things related to programmers that people pay for. The main one is recruiting. Programmers don’t pay for much or have much influence on procurement

Holy crap 28%!! If anyone impacted is reading this, DM for a TikTok / Bytedance referral

Highspot eatsmores Oct 18, 2023

Do you just go to every layoff post and advertise your referrals to TikTok? You literally post the same thing on every post about layoffs. Do your referrals even mean anything at this point? I’m sure recruiters see yet another referral from the same person that has sent 100+ and just ignore it.

ByteDance YJWK47 Oct 18, 2023

“I’m sure recruiters…” - incorrect. You have NO idea how referrals work here. The recruiting team highly encourages referrals. And referrals are reviewed by the recruiter responsible for the role. Cold applications on the career site may never reach a human. Which would you prefer? Plenty of my referrals have landed jobs, even moving across the country or internationally. And besides all that - what’s your problem anyway?
