Start-up life

Hello there. I'm considering taking a leap to start-up life. Having worked in big tech, I'm hoping a slightly smaller team could be fun and —maybe— more rewarding. Largest draw is the feeling that there's more runway to be daring vs focus on micro refinements. Has anyone made this jump? Regret it? Loved it? cheers.

Made the reverse jump. Tradeoff feels significant. I now make a lot more to have less of a voice and less impact. I tell myself that I'll go back to startups someday

Sure. I got lucky with one that I worked for, but it's tough to predict.

Facebook still operates like a startup so you won’t feel much difference.

If you are doing an early stage startup it is totally different. I have enjoyed working the most at startups and you will end up being tight with your coworkers. The downside is early startups really are a commitment to that being your life. There is no work life balance, it is just work. You dont just get to check out at 5 or not be involved when on vacation as you will have tasks that nobody else can do. If you are younger and motivated it will be a great experience. If you see work as more of a paycheck or have a family, you might hate it. You will have more responsibility and make way bigger decisions on a day to day basis. Sometimes literally deciding the future of the company and yourself. From a comp standpoint, startups can work out fine if you are younger. When TC starts getting over $300k at a big company it can be very difficult for the TC math of a startup to make sense. It really is a lottery ticket as the bulk of stats are against you succeeding and in many cases even an exit might give you less then if you had consistent high TC
