I'd probably do the start up. You don't want the horrible shame of having McKinsey on your resume
Why it's shame?
Because in general people think consultants are just over confident boasting money seeking robots.
Startup. Consulting is great but you have to live the consulting lifestyle and be a road warrior. If startup gives you a better lifestyle then the comp and equity sounds like a good option.
It’s definitely a lifestyle choice. I’ve worked in consulting before. Makes sense.
4% equity is pretty substantial
No respect for McKinsey if you want to make it in tech. That being said, if your startup is doing some basic shit then no respect for it either.
Lol if you go to MBB you can easily jump to cushy director-level biz strat positions etc in tech afterwards. Exit options are amazing but the lifestyle sucks. McKinsey is way better for the resume unless he strikes gold on the startup
Biz strat haha MBA spotted
Startup
Exit options will be way better from McKinsey (as long as you would want to target biz side positions in tech later). Lifestyle sucks though.
Mckinsey for 2 years. Learn how to solve problems and then join startup
Lol the only thing you learn is how to make pretty slides. I fail to see how you “learn to solve problems”
I work on the business side. Several of my peers are from consulting companies and I have learnt a lot from them. They are very good at understanding and formulating business processes. Their problem solving framework is also pretty robust. I love how they use MECE charts for instance to break down complex business problems. I can go on and on. Lol back at you?
Which place has better engineers? Join whoever has the best people.
Start up outsources all engineering to great partners. McKinsey? Who knows. I imagine McKinsey digital has good talent.
If the startup is outsourcing all of its eng work and your offer at McKinsey is for an engineering manager role of in-house engineers, then definitely go with McKinsey. This startup sounds like garbage tbh
Mckinsey without a doubt.
Why?
You will have a defined career path, lots of learning, work with most prestigious name in the world, bragging rights, and if you have not been in consulting it is so fun. Everyday a new problem to solve. Consulting is awesome if you work for any well known consulting firm.
McKinsey for me
