The role is for Founding Product Designer, and I’m new and changing industry from graphic design to product design. Is this a good idea? It felt like a good fit to me, but the shakiness of such a small company is kind of scary to me since I’ve built up a really strong and secure design career.
I’d push for more equity. If you’re the third or fourth employee and the company is still at an early phase, 1% is too little as a founder.
Hey, I went through exactly the same experience myself. I was the 4th hire and had a previous architectural experience. It won’t be a straightforward journey and you will need to educate everybody on the design process and methodology. I would never recommend it to somebody that just switched into design, but since you have previous graphic design background you should be good. Overall, it’s a great opportunity to try. Interviewing after that experience is definitely easier. DM me if you have more questions or we can even jump on the call.
I wonder what company this is - if it’s the same one that someone reached out to me this week about. Did they contact you on LinkedIn? 😂
Hah, was wondering the same thing 🤔
Somewhat off-topic: I ignore every single third-party recruiter that writes me or calls me (cough… TekSystems…) I’m willing to bet they’re fighting internally to place people. Puke
No, you wouldn't bring enough experience to the table to accel, and you say you're scared. Start ups are huge risk, and if you don't know what you're doing you'll have a bad time. Best to try to get somewhere you can grow and get mentorship as you're transitioning. Only hop to a startup if you believe in it, or if you're desperate.
For a company that can go up in flames at the drop of a hat I’d want more security than just 1%.
Learning is doing by having others around you who possess the experience to set up strategy, etc. This person doesn’t even have product design experience. Graphic design is not equal to UX. It doesn’t sound like it’d be good for them or the company, really.
If the start up is willing to hire someone with no product design experience as their “founding product designer” (BS title btw), that tells you all you need to know about the company

I think it sounds like an interesting opportunity. Saying you’re a founding designer always looks good on a resume and I’m sure you’ll get a lot of real world experience very quickly.
