Everyday I get between 2 - 5 messages on LinkedIn from third party recruiters, claiming to be working for x startup or y startup. As a general rule I've tended to avoid third party recruiters because they usually don't know shit and are just trying to fill roles. Am I doing myself a disservice by avoiding them? I might want to join a startup at some point...do start-ups often only work through third party recruiters?
I generally avoid recruiters with gmail addr
Sometimes startups dont want to hire a full time recruiter so they use 3rd party. Don’t miss on that. Also, sometimes there are these recruiters who just find these positions and try to push your resume with some contact(usually never works out), so beware of them
How do you avoid that situation?
Ask them directly. Its rude not to respond back. You never know when life/market might change and you need them. Plus if they share like 5-10 similar jobs with different companies, that means they are doing the work by themselves.
Yep, they generally don’t have HR resources to handle recruitment
This makes complete sense. Startups don't have brand recognition yet nor do they have HR/Recruiting resources to find the talent they are looking for. They often need third parties with wider reach and talent access
Most companies work with 3rd party recruiters at least occassionally, including FANG
Yes, startups usually contract with third party firms instead of hiring an FTE.
