I wasnt looking for a change but there was this google recruiter who was after me for a position that fits my role. I gave up on the relentless follow ups and decided to interview. The interview went good considering i wasn’t preparing in full mode. I received a very positive feedback from recruiter as well. However, i was shocked when the numbers were revealed to me. This was around 80k less than what i am making now. I called up the recruiter and asked about this nonsensical offer. The recruiter said i did not had competing offers so the it could not be raised any higher. I told her that i wasn’t in the market and i just interviewed because of the role and relentless follow ups - they should have atleast matched my current TC. At the end, i told her that i had lost all respect for a company like google and would never intervire again. My words were strong, i know, but what’s the point on wasting mutual time when you had to lowball for no reason? Did i do the right thing? Current TC: 510k (ICT5, 12 YOE) Google offer: 430k (L6)
Sorry but u should have known This is a “regular” trend with google. Lower $, lower level, delayed interview process etc. ( I m ex-google)

Why not, duh? As an employee why would it matter to me? I'd be taking a paycut weather it's from stock appreciation or not, that's my current tc.
What do you mean by stock appreciation?? I have x units of shares and they are worth amount Y today. Why is that an appreciation from anything?

Dafuk, I always talk about salary on my first phone interview. Otherwise both parties are in potential lala land. I don't get what's up with any recruiter that doesn't flat out discuss salary if they are headhunting.
Exactly! For me its google and if there is no discussion about money, i take it for granted that they will at least match my offer. If they wont, they should bring it up first. I didn’t know google is becoming so much peetty nowadays
how would they know your current comp? they can only know ballpark. is your comp in normal range at your role at Apple? recruiters used to ask comp expectations but most people refrain from giving that info early on and make them make an offer
Google is king of lowball and also lower level. Already removed Google from interview list.

Your competing offer is your current TC. You are right to be frustrated. But there was no need for the harsh words. G is not obligated to make you any kind of offer. If you dont like it, just call it an experience and move on. Besides, rather than dismissing them bluntly, you could have tried sweet talking. If anything have a chance to get you what you want it is the latter not the former .
Don’t know about you but engineering time is precious. Two weeks of this engineers time is worth $20,000.
Everybody's time is precious, not only an engineer's. Thinking otherwise is hubris. Imagine everyone asked to be compensated to interview with a company. How would that work? Similarly, the Co could charge you for their time - I bet that would cost more.
Google is not a growth company anymore like they used to be. They are a cash cow trying to maintain the status. Eventually it’ll be like GE if they don’t reinvent or invest in growth. Move on.

True but current stock price != growth. How long does it take to release a feature across the board in Google? Google plays it safe 99%. The culture is not innovative but more towards protect what you already have. if i’m wrong please provide some facts, I’ll be glad to hear you out. You and I can talk trash about Amazon all day.
