Tell us about some cool startups on your radar in nyc!
Peloton
How is peloton? Good pay?
Wasn't impressed with their cto after an interview.
ClassPass. just got a big round of funding & is growing like crazy. will be profitable this year & probably IPO soon
Fuck no, this company is shit. Trust me, it hasn't grown much and uses cheap tactics for acquisition. Though it's only less than 300 employees, it's very top heavy and political. Stay the fuck away, do not waste your time
Google you are wrong
A few lesser known ones that I find interesting - Mark43 (Software for Law Enforcement) and Cadre (Kushner's real estate fintech startup).
Cockroach Labs, Bluecore. +1 to cadre good business but boring tech. ZocDoc. NS1. Datadog, but very weak comp for where they're at. Wix, squarespace. Gilt and whatever its parent company is. Sadly NYC is mostly AdTech and who wants to work in AdTech?!?! Blah.
+ fintech. equally no fun
I want to work for Cockroach 😓 Are they hiring?
self promoting here, but SeatGeek is neither adtech nor fintech. we're focused on live events (sports, concerts, theater, etc). super awesome place to work, and still small relative to where I think we'll be in 2 years...
Respect. How's your competition? Seems as tough as music services.
I've been looking at seatgeek a little bit lately and it seems really cool! Do you guys hire interns? I'd be really interested in applying
Betterment
🤢
NYC startup scene isn't great. Some interesting stuff but no big exits. Tumblr, StreetEasy, trello anything else? Uber is only pre-ipo that pays. Seen plenty of companies manage funding but you're stuck for years with mediocre option packages that are hard to value. Hat tip to Blue Apron for exiting, but unless you got in really early doubt anyone made $$. Mediamath, conductor, gilt, rent the runway, ideeli, so many food blog/fashion/media upstarts doing nothing. Maybe buzz feed will do well?
Oh yeah there's Jet but Jersey doesn't count.
Ugh this was my perspective too, was hoping I was wrong. Seems like a lot of nyc startups don't pay the salaries that the bay area ones do as well.
What about Namely? Any word on that company?
Slice is another growing company that recently closed a small round but growing. GrubHub for artisanal pizza shops across country.
