I have a Data Engineering offer from a mid-stage startup and a DE consultant offer with McKinsey. Mckinsey offer has better TC with faster growth opportunity, but with the con of consulting WLB. Startup was recently valued at $350M with soon to have Series C funding. Options could be potentially worthless as there is no definite share value assigned yet. Which would you pick? Edit: McK bonus is yearly and expected to increase, startup options vest over 4 years with 25% vesting each year. #compensation #dataengineer #salarycomparison
What's the share value? Strike price alone not enough info
Was not given a definite share value. Just a strike price to assess.
Did you ask? I just interviewed with and got offers from several startups, and they all gave me that info. Some of them unprompted, some when I asked
What role at McK OP ? Unless it’s in the integrative consulting track , I’d be careful about joining (for reference - I’m on the integrative side) . Experts and specialists aren’t really valued the same way (unfortunately) in my experience / opinion
The track assigned to me is with QB. Sr. Fellow -> Specialist-> Principal
I see - well then unless you come in with a very clear plan on leaving in a year or so or the other offer is terrible , I’d maybe pass on McKinsey if you want to do tech work. If you are looking for comp , come in with a plan to move to the integrative track asap.
What’s the job location for both? California?
Boston
McKinsey on your resume could open doors later.
YOE?? Current TC?
You're going to get connected super fast at M. If you stick it out and move into mgmt roles in consulting you can blow away tech companies comp. Principles are ball park 500/hr BR & get pretty sizeable bonuses based on team performance. Of course that depends on your ratecard.
McK is not a tech company
DE at Mck has no future. Go for startup

The options will probably be worthless. What’s the startup job? Biz ops? Edit: For the record I still voted for the startup. Consulting sucks.
Sorry updated the post!
