Stay At Goog Or Leave

Been at google for two years as l3 and received CME last two cycles. Manager says my overall trajectory is good and no worries there. It seems like the avg time for l3-4 is ~3yrs in my org. Manager also said not to worry about comp. My TC right now is 224k so I am assuming my manager can bump that a bit even with CME. Not sure if I should stick around or start looking at other companies to maximize TC. I value ultimate financial freedom most at this point. TC 224k YOE 4

Wait a sec, mgr said not to worry about comp? Is they gonna spot you rent and stuff? Pretty sweet deal if so.

Wait till comp change to see how much you get If you're getting around let's start 280k, then honestly not worth 300k switch

Just leave. Looks like you are working on shitty projects or tasks that nobody recognize. Either start working on design documents for impactful tasks or get ready to interview.

OP i am exactly the same situation as you, expect maybe 6 months ahead. The first 2 yrs of my career I was stuck in 3 and EE 2 times. Had a team reorg and management/focus area change. Was frustrated for sure and even started interviewing. However I did just get promoted to 4, at my 2.5 year mark. So try to figure out if really the projects you are getting have no chance of ever having impact (in which case leave) or if other people are doing projects you like and try to push to work closely with them instead. Most importantly try to see if your management is trying to help you but couldn't this time because of other reasons or they don't care to help you at all

Yeah I was also part of a re-org in which I got a new manager about 1 year in. My current manager mentioned that has also played a role in delayed ratings/promo. Had I stayed on original team trajectory could have been different. I think the projects I am on now are worthy for promo but it would be very unlikely to get promoted next cycle (2.5yr). After 1yr it seems very likely. Thanks for sharing! I think I am going to start prepping for interviews and see what I get.

That's a good point, yes definitely doesn't hurt to prep for interviews. Just curious, why are you certain your current projects won't qualify for promo in the coming cycle? If your manager says so, then yes, but just wanted to check.
