Can’t decide. Got an offer from SpaceX. It’s less pay and on-site and the real equity value is hard to calculate, but probably more fun and more stable than Coinbase (SpaceX kind has a monopoly on both satellite internet and cheap cargo rockets (self landing)) —————— UPDATE —————— Thanks for the responses everyone, a lot of them actually were helpful. I’ve decided to stay at CB for now.
160k loss + uncertainty about working conditions and team dynamics at SpaceX
Yoe and location?
Hard to take a comp hit but it would be cool to work at spacex.
I'm at over 400k at spacex but I'd take 400k coinbase for the remote work plus liquid equity. Working on rockets sounds fun but most people get over it pretty quick.
spacex seems pay very well. Not sure how much more growth room for spacex stock. But for coinsbase, stock is tied to bitcoin?
I believe SpaceX is private. If they ever go public the shares would probably be worth a lot of money. So there's that. But I doubt musk wants to take it public anytime soon with all of the enemies he's making. Remember, before SpaceX the US government was relying on Putin to take US astronauts up to the ISS. Their launches are way cheaper and more reliable than what the legacy defense companies could produce.
We have a unique public/private market. The company is technically private, but opens a secondary market 2x a year where shareholders can put up their shares for exchange with a pool of external investors. We're only able to sell during these windows, but I've sold over 1M so liquidity has been decent lately at least. Because of this and single trigger vesting, I don't think there's a huge need for IPO as a lot of people have been cashing out along the way. Also since we mark to market somewhat consistently so I doubt an IPO would be a big price jump.
I would accept SpaceX offer. Only becaus I care less about the pay and I want to work for Spaceship as well as experience Musk company culture. And I am ready to leave any time if I don't like it
Wanting to experience Musk company culture makes you sound like a masochist.
Correction: Makes me feel like you sound like a masochist. For the record, I hate Musk and I wouldn't ever work in his companies. But what is this with labelling people who think otherwise. This is just ridiculous. @extern could have some other motivations to experience Musk company culture. Labelling them as masochistic is a perfect example of what's happening in society these days. Hard for anyone to have an opinion or thought differing from the majority.
One of these companies has a CEO that bought hairplugs, and the other has a CEO that embraced the bald. Numbers aside, the decision is clear. Jokes aside - SpaceX is a paycut and you lose the ability to be remote. I personally wouldn't even consider it. Space exploration is just as much of a meme as magic internet money.
Space exploration is just a meme? My brother in christ, google is the founding family of the entire meme generation.
Google organizes the world's information and makes it globally accessible. SpaceX wastes a bunch of money to shoot metal into the void.

You're shitting me.. 160k per year equity?
Yeah because CB current TC is so high initial 2 grants offers were just too little to make a move. I also have an Amazon Kuiper offer I showed them but I ruled that out because it’s Amazon and Kuiper I hear is a complete mess.
If I were you I would accept the offer. But only if you can really deliver.
