Stay at Google or go to Disney (streaming)?

It's been 6 months since I joined Google (GCP) as L4. I just received an offer from Disney Streaming core platforms (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, etc..) as principal eng. current TC: 302k Disney Offer: 315k Not a huge TC bump, but the level at Disney puts me closer at my goal of being a people manager. Is it too soon to jump ship? #disney #disneystreamingservices #hulu #google

Does streaming and entertainment have more interesting problems than GCP? It’s a nice level bump.

Disney seems to be looking for a lead eng from big company. As the VP in my interview said "we hope to learn and be influenced by someone with more concrete foundation". Not exactly an engineering problem, but a high-level process I'm interested to improve on.

I interviewed with them and found them to be the nicest people I ever met. Considering an offer now.

Why would you take more responsibility without being properly compensated for it?

Right now, I feel like there's more focus on quantity of work than quality. My org is so focused on pumping out new features in this cloud rat race. whereas at Disney, I'm getting hints of significantly less work, but the role seems true to the level -- influence and leading engineers.

Do what you think makes you happy. I doubt anyone would seriously bash you for it. If you like Google though, I don't think you should jump ship. Just have conversations with your people leader about your goals. If you're not very happy at Google then sure, make the jump. They seem like equal opportunities. I think you can get to your goal within a similar amount of time (1/2 year difference) at either company.

Why the rush to be a people manager? If you are in a hurry go to Disney. Seems like overall a step back though. At Google you are a promo away from managing, possibly 2. That’s 3-5 years away. However, if you make it, that sets you up to be an EM anywhere you want. The reverse isn’t going to be true if you become an EM at Disney. That’s not to say it’s not possible, but may be the harder path in the long run. Source: I’m an EM and have been in both small and large companies.

Why do you assume it’s a “rush”?
