Unfortunately the hiring bar didn't give me L6 as I was hoping for, which would've mirrored job responsibilities of my current role. I'm guessing the lack of cross functional project leadership was the reason for not getting L6. I haven't gotten hard numbers yet but from levels it looks like I can expect about 335K TC at the best case scenario since I live in SF. Here are the hard facts of my current situation: - Total TC for 2023 will be 270k cash, with a 45k bonus in Feb 2023. Why all cash? Company used to be public until it was acquired by a PE firm. When the stock vests, I get paid cash instead. - company is a tier 2/3 SaaS company with little name brand value. - WLB is really good. I'm a little fatigued from working on the same product for so long but I'm also close to a promo at my current job. WLB is also really good so I have a lot of bandwidth for interviews. The square L6 TC of 500kish would have made this an easy decision but I'm not sure if the move is worth it for L5 at square. Ultimately it will be a tough decision because the hiring market isn't good right now so not sure if I'll have a better entry point into big tech anytime soon. I've done a decent number of other interview loops without offers and have felt like 4/5 interviews have gone well but just haven't put together a complete interview performance besides at square. I'm not entirely sure what to do if the numbers for this offer come in as expected. yoe - 7
Why move if you are not getting a big pay bump and have good wlb?
Just looking to work on something different and get a blue chip company on my resume.
OP mind DMing you? I have an interview loop coming up soon for a program manager role
Sure thing
Sent you a DM 🙂
Sounds like you'll have a more interesting role for a company that's more respected. Break in and then move around, your resume will open doors. There's no knowing how wlb will be at square. Maybe it'll be perfect
Square stock is going to drop even more. I’d say TC is the same
I was roughly where you were a year ago. L6 loop at Square, downleveled to L5, which I blame on my poor skills at the time at selling my leadership experience. Pay bump seemed reasonable but not mind blowing, so I took it. WLB has been good, but I’m now below where I came from for TC. Really feel the pain of that every day with things as expensive as they are now. Don’t undervalue high cash comp in todays market.
Our situations are pretty similar. I’m probably closer to getting the experience I need for L6 at my current job anyways. Sucks to have spent so much time job searching to end up with nothing but I’m not seeing enough reasons to join square at L5.
Don’t come to SQ. Everyone that joined in the last 2 years are checking out and won’t help. Old timers hate you for making more and won’t help. TC will drop like a rock with the stock while the C suite hide. Source: I joined last year as L5 with a TC of ~330k in the Bay. I am literally you from the future but much much less TC now
Are you interviewing?
waiting for vest to put in notice
Don’t come to Square. It’s not enough of a bump and your SQ comp is likely to continue decreasing if you join (and leadership will not fix it). I also joined for a modest pay increase but instead ended up with a not-so-modest pay decrease. I’m L6 and am making significantly less than your offer now.
Make it a poll
I should've known to do this by now
