I've been offered a role with Disney as a Senior Technical Product Manager. It would come with a nearly 25% pay increase from where l'm at today, and Disney has always been one of my top companies. However, it's a contract role for only 18 months. It is also hybrid with 3 days in office at the Orlando HQ whereas right now I am fully remote. The caveat to that last part is that I am fully remote at a pretty toxic startup. They say there is opportunity to convert, but I'm not too sure with how the tech job market is. I've been in startups my whole career, so this would be a major shift and would also put a big name company on my resume. On the flip side of this is my wife and I have been wanting to move to Los Angeles for years, and we're finally in a position to do so. LA presents much better opportunity for both of us in terms of the job market, and if the worse case were to happen with my current toxic job (ie: layoff), I would think LA would be a better city for that to happen in given the better job market there. Basically, our decision has come to either career fulfillment or personal fulfillment. One leaves us better economically whereas the other leaves us better mentally. It's an extremely tough decision that I am finding impossible to answer.

Update: Trans Coworker Stealing Breast Milk
Opportunity comes a knocking when you take care of yourself and not in a toxic environment. 18 months is a good timeline for the IT market to reset to where ever it’s heading. It’ll also give you enough time to think about what’s really important to you. Use the 25% increase to buy stock at the lowest point.
I don't know which is a better option but Disney is no faang.
No, but still a respectable Company to have on the resume.
If your dream is LA move there and find out. Perhaps a startup in CA will make you a better offer once they know you live there and aren’t just coming for the money and flake out because you’re tired of the culture.
What’s the disney TC?

Nice!!!
Can you ask to work at the Disney SoCal office?
I know the division I have an offer for has an office there, but for this role in particular, they were specifically hiring for the Orlando office. Can contractors request to be at a different office? I figured that’d be something reserved only for FTE.
Worth a shot for sure
When *exactly* would you move if you moved now? Would you literally pick up and move in may or do you have a lease / need time to pack / time to plan / other obligations/ vacation planned so wouldn’t actually get there til Sept or something? I ask because 18 months isn’t very long. I’d take the job, plan to move in a year or so and then apply for Disney jobs in Burbank for when your contract is over. Maybe they make you stay the full 18 maybe they don’t. Imagine if moving takes a few months and you could have been 25% done with the contract but instead kept hating life at the startup.
Good question. We’d plan to move August 1st.
Florida sucks. I'd take the job and move.
I agree that Florida sucks haha, but taking the job would keep me in Florida.
On 2nd thought, I'd take the Disney job and plan a move to CA later. There's a lot more opportunities available at Disney than some random startup.
I'd rather live in a dump with a job I like than live in paradise with a toxic job. A place you hate grows on you a bit and you start to appreciate a little more. It's the opposite at a toxic job, where the longer you are, the worse it gets. Little by little, but continuously, it consumes your happiness and soul.
Unless you’re going to be making $400k in LA don’t move here. It’s expensive so you’ll be stuck either living in a bad area bc it will be all you can afford or have an insane commute so you can live somewhere safe but affordable. LA has seriously gone down hill the last 10 years. It’s not safe with crime and homelessness out of control. You’re not going to get the mental wellness you think you’re going to get by moving here.
Dude LA is an absolute shithole. Not saying Orlando is better, but LA will eat you alive once that toxic startup starts letting people go. Get Disney on your resume ASAP.
If he does this his wife will hate him for it. The wife being ready to move means he either moves too or puts up with some next level bullshit.
find a new wife, i am with edgelord on this one
