Report it to the police ASAP. Ensure you get a copy of the police report once you are done. I lost my passport many years ago. When I went back to get my vida re-stamped, the guy at the US embassy was about to dismiss me because he had not noticed the police report (which I had already tried to point out to him). He said something like, “Sorry, but if something like this happens ever again, I hope you remember to report it to the police and bring a copy to the visa interview.” I pointed out that he had it in his hands, so he examined it, and after a few seconds was telling me when I would receive my passport back with my visa. It was *that close.* You need to contact the Indian embassy to get a new passport ASAP as well. Inform your employer’s immigration attorney as well as your personal one (if you have one). Yes, you need to leave the country to get a new visa stamp. I would suggest you go to your home country to mitigate risk — visa interview outside your country PLUS having lost a passport may be too much for some consular officers to handle — but technically you just have to go to any US embassy. Oh, and try to look contrite and sh¡t when you go for the visa interview. Even though it was not your fault. They take this really seriously since a passport with a US visa stamp can be used for nefarious purposes. And they expect you to show how much you know you fvcked up.
