Streaming showdown

We all work in the same domain. What do you think about everyones tech? What’s good? What needs love? I can start: @netflix: I think your encoding is the best (really high quality at lower than average bitrates) @D+: UX is very streamlined. Thought it was too simple at first but quite intuitive @youtube tv: dont know much but i assume the infra is state of the art given how good infra in google usually is. is tv a separate team from vod? @amazon: the player is a show stopper for me on web

Op : what are thoughts on Hulu ?

Hulu jimhoffa OP Dec 16, 2019

Not a huge fan. Feels more like a media company that has engineers than a tech company

Hulu slacks Jan 7, 2020

+1 on the media company thing. But if this is a tech/product discussion I think Hulu is the only one on the list that offers live and non live long form content in a relatively seamless package. Add Disney in and it’s a pretty solid bundle for the price.

Someone comment on cnn tech

Turner NewsDev Dec 17, 2019

I mean, is there a reason why? Too many people confuse content with technology. And your username is "rarepepe" so I can only assume what kind of person you are.

What about Hotstar? Any comparison of streaming services involving performance, UX, Volume and tech stake will be incomplete without HotStar In it. Disney made a huge investment in buying 21CF other than content HotStar is the only tech asset that came up in the deal but it is still to be leveraged for competitive advantage however not being based in US can also mean HotStar will die the death of UTV (a formerly very successful and progressive Studio died under Disney’s central leadership)

I don't find Disneys UX special. It only seems streamlined and intuitive because you know the IP not because the UI lends itself to it. It's easier to drive around a neighborhood when you know all the houses on the street.

The “X-Ray” feature on Amazon Prime that shows the actors and music in the current scene is a show stopper. Much respect to the team who collected that metadata.

Turner NewsDev Dec 16, 2019

I think imdb crowd source collected that data. Still a fame changing feature that I find myself wishing other platforms had

Disney omegared Jan 23, 2020

I don’t think that’s the case actually. Maybe with the actors but if it’s really scene by scene that is likely coming from the studio as they have access to docs with the actors broken out by scene. Music info I’m 99% certain comes from the studio.

I cringe every time I need to open Amazon, it’s a good thing they have some decent originals, the UX design is almost a barrier for me.

NBCUniversal anon9163 Jan 15, 2020

The fact that they have duplicate entries for 1080p and UHD content will forever annoy me

HBO yakko Dec 17, 2019

I’d ask about HBO Now... But I think I’d prefer not know.

What is the real purpose of profiles on Netflix? If it is to share the same account among multiple users, why aren't they separating authenticationfor each profile?
