I've been at Google for 4 years. I know that Google is supposed to be one of the better companies in terms of WLB... yet I find myself stressed, tired, and overall frustrated with the work here. Sometimes I wonder if I'd be happier and less stressed by working at a no-name or "lower tier" company, even if I were to take a pay cut. But maybe I'm just fantasizing, and in reality I'll be just as stressed and tired but instead being paid 🥜. Has anyone else made a decision like this? What was your expectation vs reality? Yes, new place is fun for a while then gets back to being bad. I recommend changing things up within your own workflow internally before going elsewhere
Did you personally do something like this and would be willing to share examples?
Thank you, I really appreciate the additional perspective and all the advice/recommendations. I've been experimenting with some of those factors, such as no longer caring about promo and (trying to) stop worrying. My manager is chill, but others like our PM and higher ups always bring up and emphasize deadlines and make a bigger deal out of it than it really should be (in my opinion). I guess in the meantime I'll try focusing on some of the other suggestions, and maybe keep an eye out for internal transfer opportunities. Thanks again!
Yes, explore new opportunities you may be interested in. Life is too short to not explore
Software in general is stressful. I made good enough for retirement. I am going to retire next year. Might so something else with very little stress
If you are tired and stress in a relatively good wlb, you are not meant to do what you are doing. Find something else.
Maybe you have a point.
better than me. Stress and tired and less TC while same YOE
Can you elaborate why you feel tired, stressed, frustrated? Is it team related? Nature of your position? Google overall?
Frustrated by all the process and approvals needed to do the simplest of things. I guess the above also feeds into the stress part - there's so many dependencies not in my control and this adds pressure/stress when it comes to meeting deadlines and expectations. And overall just tired... I've taken 3-4 week long vacations and come back not revitalized or anything... Regarding the first two parts about process and dependencies - this is where I wonder if it's better at another company.
I’ve heard this a lot but it seems people have different experiences in teams but overall this bureaucracy is a common issue in big tech. I’d say hang in there, take the pay check during this bad season and if it doesn’t get better jump to a startup or midsize company where things much faster.
4 yrs 280k and calling 🥜. You will never be happier with that attitude.
I'm not saying my current TC is 🥜. But rather if I were to take a lower paying job hoping to be less stressed and happier
I experienced that in Goog, some team (and position) is not chill as they said. I end up quitting, before I go insane
I’ve thought along the same lines. I don’t think lower tier companies or ones that pay less are necessarily less stressful.

Grass is always greener on the other side. So I would say know the team well before you jump into something like this
