#stripe Curious about the difference in pay for jobs at the same SWE level between US and Canada. Are there any companies which pay almost the same in Canada and US. Blind tax 195 CAD 4yr exp
This data may be old (2020) but shows the relative difference - the comp range for L6 SDE at Amazon was in 2020. I don't have the 2021 numbers on hand to see new ranges. But I'd be surprised if the relative difference between US and Canada bands changed much: US (Seattle): 264,000-400,000 USD US (Bay): 300,000-470,000 USD Canada: 234,000-360,000 CAD The difference, in 2020, was take the US comp for Seattle, convert to CAD at 1to1 fx, and then subtract about 10% or so. Adjusting for actual FX, it's about 30-40% less I think. Gap is much bigger vs Bay area comp. Amazon (and others) pay well in Canada compared to smaller companies, but not when you look at US salaries. Especially as the cost of living and taxes are higher in Vancouver vs Seattle. But comp is 30% less.
Amazon L6 max just changed to 600k usd for 2022.
Yeah. I don't mean to use those as absolute numbers since they are now 2yrs out of date. But relative comparison of US (incl Bay area) vs Canada comp for same role. I'd like to think the Canada bands will go up the same amount in 2022...but I suspect that the gap will actually just widen further.
L5s are getting in the 300-400 in the Bay Area.
I’m a Canadian developer who’s long worked for US-based companies. It usually seems like 15-35% deduction for Canadians. So if your salary was 135k USD living Seattle, it would likely be something like 100k USD (127k CAD) living in Canada. This huge gap definitely sucks and I’d like to see it close ASAP.
Not going to happen if anything it will get worse. Canada is immigrating as many people as the US and the US is 10x their size. More people coming in with less jobs will keep wages down
Nah, getting much better. I’m in Toronto, and US companies are fighting hard for talent. In my experience I’d say the labor market here is getting much better. The expectations of a senior dev at a top firm are 400K CAD which is still relatively low compared to SF/Seattle, but this has skyrocketed in the last 2-4 years. Salaries are continuing to skyrocket. If you can hold more than 1-2 offers while negotiating you can absolutely try for 450-500 K CAD as a senior at top firm. Worth noting my data is biased to Stripe/Bolt/Brex/Coinbase.

I don't think so. In general developers in China and India are far better than most devs in USA or elsewhere still they get paid peanuts in comparison. Your pay isnt reflective of the worth of your work. It's reflective of the local hiring conditions. It remains toughest to hire quality talent in the USA. Canada not so much.
“In general developers in China and India are far better than most devs in USA or elsewhere“….. What an absolutely ridiculous conclusive statement to make.
