Management is parallel to IC in levels. After a specific level you could try yourself as a manager. It's an alternative to IC growth - both are options
How is growth in general? I keep hearing that it’s all messy ruby code, lots of reorgs and manager churn
It's a rocketship. The code can be messy in any language and our ruby code is typed and refactorable. If you're hearing that some team is messy and having reorgs, it's problem of that team. Company-wide engineering metrics are doing really well, both in engagement and in impact. I'm happy to be here and have a lot of growth that has happened and will happen
Could you possibly compare it other places you’ve worked?
Much better than Google. You have a lot of opportunities for impact and appetite for quality(reliability & security) is very high. But we're a pretty big company now and I won't be surprised that some groups aren't well run and others may have different experience.
Can you also talk about WLB? If you have been at google before, what is it like compared to google?
Why manage?
