Hi all, I recently got offers from Stripe and Roblox, and I need help deciding. YOE: 3 Stripe: Base: 175k, 10% bonus Stock: 110k per year Roblox: Base: 205k Stock: 400k over 4 years I know vast majority will vote for Stripe, but at Roblox I will be working on voice chats, which is an very interesting problem space on its own. Additionally, I’ve always wanted to work on 3D graphics/virtual world, and for that reason I think Roblox is a really good next step in my career. On the other hand, I’ve heard so many good things about Stripe’s engineering culture and quality. And constantly learning to become a better engineer is also what I value in my next job. And even though the problem space isn’t as exciting as Roblox, the tech vertical is something I want to explore. (Full stack, I was mostly backend before and wanted to be more consumer facing). 3 years into the industry, and I think it’s a key moment to mold my career trajectory. Should I prioritize Being more technically skilled, or more engaging work? Thank you all in advance!! Edit: for those that select “but for other reasons”, can you comment the reasons below? Edit: updated with Roblox offer #stripe #roblox #engineering #career #careerbuilder #softwareadvice #tech
Whats role at Stripe ?
Full stack. I was mostly backend before and wanted to be more consumer facing. Also updated original post.
Stripe is overrated. Go to Roblox
Why do you think so? Mind elaborate?
It’s just an API for payment. They haven’t done anything else in the last 10 years.
Roblox is going to be a meme stock. 2x your RSU value if you join before Feb
What is a good tactic to ask them to raise RSU value? I certainly can’t say “your stock will stonk so gimme more” lol
direct listing might limit upside
3D live chat? Which team is that sounds cool
I think you're going to learn a lot at either company - both have great engineering talent. Given the choice, I'd go with the company that excites you most.
Company that excites me, rather than team/project that excites me, you say?
The work, specifically. You don't want to be at a company where you don't find the work engaging or interesting. Considering you'll be spending 40-50 hours - maybe more - each week, go where you'll actually be interested in the projects. It sounds like Roblox is a better fit for you and what you're looking for.
Updated the post with numbers from Roblox!
Is that Senior offer IC3?
Yes
I would discount how much tech skills you’ll learn at Stripe. Stripe front end is a night mare (no typescript) coming from a full stack background. Our tech stack is ruby and mongo lol. A lot of our work is boring bank integrations dealing with legacy systems and code. You’ll get good at writing docs though we document everything. Stripe is a bit higher regarded in terms of prestige but both are great. I will say I also interviewed at roblox and the culture seems pretty different - stripe is very performance driven while roblox seems more chill esp for a gaming tech company. But both are very koolaidy.
Thanks for sharing your insight! Would you choose otherwise if you can go back in time?
I joined stripe when the offers were still 4 year fixed rsu vesting schedule. but with the new offer structure in terms of upside it does make the roblox offer more attractive. at the end of the day, optimize for your priorities. My experience at Stripe is long hours, it was my highest offer I felt like couldn’t turn down, the reward potential is huge but it comes at a cost of mental health. I can’t say what roblox is like bc I’ve never worked there but the fact that they don’t have performance based bonus makes it seem a lot more chill. Knowing a couple friends who worked at Yelp stripe WLB is much much worse
Hi op, congrats on the offers. I am interviewing with Roblox soon. Do you mind if I dm you to ask about the interview?
Sure thing
Dm'd you as well

Asians - what are your thoughts on asian female white male ?
Look into Stripe’s new RSU policy, might be a factor as well.
True, but i think it’s better to not consider TC for the sake of minimizing variables
why, do you work for free?
