Stripe vs SpaceX

I don’t care much about TC, more about the work I’m doing contributing to my growth as as an engineer and how it affects future prospects of other jobs. If any SpaceX/Stripe folks wanna chime in please DM me or comment here YOE: 1.5 years Stripe TC: $220k SpaceX TC: $160k + no rent/utility cost (grandparents live nearby), probably brings closer to ~$190k sssuming SF rent is $2.5K/mo Stripe. In backend/infra role SpaceX in application software role

For web/front end/back end roles I’d definitely say go to Stripe. SpaceX does great work but your field is just a means to the end for them and you won’t really be on the cutting edge. For Stripe it’s the opposite, the kind of work you do is their bread and butter. If you were doing lower level systems work then SpaceX would definitely be the place to go.

Thanks for that insight. I hadn’t considered that before.

Seconded. I've dabbled in both here and would avoid application software work like the plauge.

I don't have any valuable input but I voted SpaceX but I may be biased.

Thanks for commenting! Can I ask what you work on? Are you familiar with some of the teams in App Software Org? You can also DM me as well

I'm an operations supervisor so totally different unfortunately. Totally different world!

I’d pick Stripe

SpaceX is a great place to work if you’re into rockets and space. I’d imagine you’d get burned out really quickly otherwise with the amount of hours we work. Application software is a cool team to be on, they don’t work directly on the rockets but their work is super critical to the mission as well

They own the data review tools that we use at all times leading up to and during a launch. They also own our internal CI/CD tool that runs all of our tests on real/simulated hardware. These are the first two products that come to mind, but they support a lot of important infrastructure within the company.

How many hours per week do you generally work? I get the appeal of the company, but I'm not applying to a job that says ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends

I’m biased towards SpaceX, but you won’t go wrong with either. That being said, they say that 1 year of experience at SpaceX is equivalent to 3 years of exp at any other company (no joke cause u will be literally be working that much). As an engineer you will def grow lots and be able to take ownership of the projects that you work on, with every person being able to make an impact on the mission. You can also pretty much transfer to other teams/projects later to whatever you are interested in, so the possibilities are limitless for the learning opportunities

SpaceX to change the world and have awesome stories for your grandkids. I've been working in tech in San Francisco forever and I have to think twice to remember what Stripe does again. Not dissing them, it's just that there are thousands of tech companies, but only a handful of mankind-changing missions.
