EU regulators dEsTrOyEd If you want social media then either pay with your data or pay with $. We won’t run our servers for free. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/10/03/meta-wants-to-charge-europeans-to-access-instagram-facebook-report-.html EDIT: what people are missing is that we don’t actually want people to subscribe to this. EU regulations will require users to actively consent to targeted ads. This will frame the question as “do you want targeted ads or do you want to pay for ads-free?”. Users will consent. TC $410k
Why would anyone want to pay for social media? It’s the leading cause of anxiety and depression in the young generation.
It’s like one of those things: “tobacco is injurious to health” - yet people smoke it
I suggest they GTFO and actually live a happy life free of toxic social media 😇 Also, while I realize the irony of posting this on a social media app, I stand by my comment.
It’s a smart move, these useless non-contributing EU legislators need to be checked for their extortion.
The only reason social media has the traction that it does is that it's free. There will always be people addicted to pay for the services. But I'm certain there are more people on the other side who will jump off the bandwagon if asked to pay for it.
It’s the option: free service in exchange for waving your rights to not be served targeted ads, or pay up
Can't imagine paying money for any social media.
Makes sense to me — why should Meta be providing free access if they aren’t allowed to collect data and run ads?
Good. Shut it down
Sounds fair.
People just won’t use it anymore. They already getting crushed by inflation how would they pay for social media LOL
I think that's the plan. Give this choice to the users and make them agree to targeted ads explicitly.
More like pay with your data AND pay with $
Not in the EU, those are harsh laws about privacy and using data without consent
