Sunset of the social network

Now that The Boomer Wasteland (Facebook) along with Instagram is redesigning itself to be more like TikTok, and Snapchat being pushed to the edge of oblivion, will the algorithmically generated feeds become the standard everywhere? Do you agree with people who are calling it the end of social networking era? https://www.axios.com/2022/07/25/sunset-social-network-facebook-tiktok

Meta is doomed. Social network is not!

Amazon anjappar Jul 25, 2022

No Meta is doomed.

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

Meta's 97% revenue comes from ads. Facebook is the largest member of their family of apps. Meta will never be the same without Facebook.

Beginning of the end of 1:1 social media, start of 1:many social media. 1:1 = connecting with and following people you know IRL 1:many = connecting with and following people you’ve never met IRL

Amazon anjappar Jul 25, 2022

What you are saying is…. Twitter was way ahead of its time!

Workiva oMlc61 Jul 25, 2022

Yeah actually

Ford Motor Company pfOR47 Jul 25, 2022

I will not be on any platform like tiktok

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

Good for you, Dan.

Meta public2 Jul 25, 2022

Yes, imessage, youtube, wechat, snap, fb, ig, horizon, whatsapp, tik tok, blind, reddit, etc are all dead. Humans are no longer social.

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

You completely missed the point being discussed. But I can understand and empathize with your pains. Keep your chin up, bud! 🤗

Meta public2 Jul 25, 2022

Algorithmic freed have been the norm for some time now. Is that your question? I don't have any pain?

Meta litoKun Jul 25, 2022

This is sad because it's more of the mindless timewaster low attention content, but less of the "connecting people" kind of content. You know what help you connect with old friends or distant relatives. At the beginning fb was really cool. Before the likes and friend count competition, before the algorithmic sorting. It was also unfortunately not profitable in that shape. I wonder if there was a way to make it profitable without making it shitty and dangerous

Sunset implies sunrise is soon coming. Pick your words wisely.

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

Sunset in the west, sunrise in the east?

Meta bankzy Jul 25, 2022

99% of your posts are about Meta. It’s kind of weird.

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

Almost every article on Meta mentions TikTok these days. A direct competitor with a lot happening.. I don't see a reason why not to talk about it. And I post a lot, not sure where that 90% is from, but I can stop if it's making you insecure.

Amazon anjappar Jul 25, 2022

Meta is used to seeing amazon getting dragged through mud (deservingly), it is weird to see Meta for a change

Tiktok will buy us all out

Meta Lasso4Eva Jul 25, 2022

Zuck can’t innovate. His whole business strategy is to buy competitors and copy competitors. Running a business based on FOMO is not a sustainable long term strategy. Even worse his one semi-original idea (metaverse) is a vaporware clown show run by an hypersensitive egomaniac (boz). The stock price today is below the same point 5 years ago. Any other company would have fired the CEO by now. It’s sad really

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

Well said. It's not really a family business but Zuckerberg wouldn't likely let go of the helm anytime soon. Still hypothetically speaking, is there a replacement for Meta CEO that people in anti-Zuck camp are excited about?

Meta Lasso4Eva Jul 25, 2022

No one would be happy with anyone initially. Look at Tim Cook, an ops guy, replacing a visionary in Steve Jobs. Or Sundar taking over Google or Satya taking over Microsoft. All those picks worked out, but didn’t ignite a lot of inspiration initially on the outside. Often times the boring unknown pick or the boring known pick is the best. A tech CEO doesn’t need to be an inventor, they need to be a CEO. In that sense there are a number who could: sheryl, schrep, cox, javier. the funny thing about zuck though, is there almost certainty he would pick the one person everyone internally would near unanimously agree would be the worst person for the job: boz.

the only thing TikTok is winning is users' screen time. Social media still gonna be here. Their pie might be smaller but there is still some for them. There is no way TikTok gonna replace that. Imagine people post TikTok of their daily lives. That will never happen. See China market where short videos already exist for a long time. Weibo and WeChat still lives around.

ByteDance ‎SirPunch OP Jul 25, 2022

You're right that there is place for connecting with your friends through ways that short video platforms aren't quite made for. TikTok will eventually include features to talk to your social circle but I'm not really in favor of one-app-does-all strategy. Re: TikTok being a daily drive.. Chinese people use Douyin about 2 hrs a day. It is so addictive that they had to limit the number of minutes kids can use the app for after 6 pm. At the end of the day, most apps in the adtech category are competing for users'attention, and a user only has 24 hrs in a day. This inadvertently pits TikTok against unlikely competitors like Netflix. So other apps won't go away, they'll simply have lesser and lesser screen time.

Google bhjthji Jul 25, 2022

The point is posting about your daily life is dying because you're life it isn't remotely interesting. It never was, there was a brief period of pretending fit the last few years
