Is meta really worth the wait?
I am on an H1B visa and a perpetual Green Card beggar in the US. With the rampant risk of layoffs and a tricky job security in the US, I had secured a Canadian PR. However, I learned and realized that Canada has now become shit. There are very few jobs and the quality of work you get is no longer comparable to the US. I also think that perhaps India is growing at a right pace and it should be a better back up for me. Trudeau has taken Canada to gutters. I am considering to surrender the PR before the Canadian government revokes it for not maintaining the 730d stay. Over the next 5 months, I could move to Canada but with a huge pay cut and extremely limited growth opportunities in exchange of a Canadian citizenship in three years.
Think about it, you stay long enough to not lose it and get your Canadian citizenship and then get a TN visa to work in the US long term and although Canada is not doing great, you can have that option in your back pocket if you need it.
No point in spending 3 years in Canada just for the passport. But you must make actions now to secure a country's passport which is considered developed. Germany/UK/Australia/NZ/Singapore/... Getting US passport is impossible. Indian population is so huge that any growth is absorbed just by the top 1% of new grads. Being a employee in India is meaningless given the country has more new grads each year compared to all the jobs combined. Remember that getting a passport of any other country is tremendously difficult and takes much longer than 3 years, which means that your peak earning age in US is sacrificed for that. No corporations hire people and pay top $$ after 40s.
There is no guarantee that you will get your TN visa approved every time... getting tn visa means forfeit your h1 and i140
Here’s how I made the calculation. Today, minimum cost of eb5 is 800k in USA. That means the Canadian citizenship you get by paying 3 years of your time not earning in US should be significantly less than that. For me 800/3 = ~200k year and since me and my wife are both in FANG the cost for 3 years is a lot more than 800k plus career growth cost. so we would much rather do eb5 than move to Canada just for the Citizenship. This is how we made our decision and are giving up our pr card this year
266k USD after tax savings(that would be entire savings for most couple). That would not give you a GC. EB5 is not just 800k. It costs a little more than that. And it is not gaureenteed and there are many things which can go wrong. And there is processing delays. Application delay, then 2 year conditional GC. To get the unrestricted GC it takes ~ 4 years. And the EB5 unreserved priority date for India is 2020. There's a 4 year wait at a minimum for that category. So essentially one will loose all of the 800k. No getting it back. There is a possible scenario where it might be partially unsuccessful and hence cost upward of 1 million. Have to wait 3-4 years after setting aside the 1 million. Eb5 vs canada citizenship. Canada is a risk free peaceful option. I would anyday invest that 1 million in index funds and live in Canada on the returns, taking a mini retirement of sorts and build a family.
@oracle - agreed
Why not just do the US investment green card? The opportunity cost of going to Canada will be more expensive.
Exactly. Specially if you’re making FANG money
How much it is?
It’s 1095 days. Not 730 days
It is 730 days to be able to renew the PR again for another 5 year period.
Just out of curiosity, what was your CRS? And did MSFT help you with an LMIA approved offer? I see most single people in my boat are maxing out at 475-481 (assuming perfect or near perfect IELTS score) + 3 years international work exp. Do you think that will be sufficient to get an invitation by next year say? Also, can Ontario PNP be considered for IT/SDE related jobs if I dont have canadian exp and am not residing in Canada?
Oh. I had applied directly through the FSW program. No employer or job offer needed. My score was 492 and this was about 2.5 years ago. I didn't involve my current or former US employer. Went completely independent. These days I have heard that the CRS is getting tougher and higher for cut off.
Take Canada option, get citizenship and come back send get gc in Eb1C. You get best of both worlds.
Not everyone is a manager.
You sure don’t know what is EB1C and how to milk it
Not everyone is a manager.
But everyone can become a manager in 2-3 years.
Looks like your mind is made up. Why ask here?
