Hi all, I have been working at ServiceNow for 4.5 years as a Senior Software Engineer (IC3), and I have reached a plateau. I feel that growth has become impossible at ServiceNow (both knowledge and position). My promotion is in limbo because of my VP, who hates me. He can't fire me since I lead his most important products, and he won't promote me since I keep calling out his bullshit. It's one of those psycho VPs who was hired last year who only cares about his KPIs and pushes everyone around. At this point, I feel, I should jump ship and get a new job, but the market sadly tanked. So, I am trying to figure out what should be my next step. The work is good with no overtime and stress-free. We also get unlimited PTOs, and I was able to take two months in total off last year. So should I give up this nice job for growth (plus avoiding the psycho VP) or should I stay put for now? Also, if I leave, what can I expect to make in this market? I have no dependents/loans, so nothing stops me from switching jobs. Current: ServiceNow YOE: 10 (7 as Software Engineer) TC: 250k Location: Chicago
You are arrogant in thinking that you aren't replaceable and that a VP's job depends on the work and kpi 's that you produce. You are miserable there so if you are such an amazing software engineer and think that servicenow will crumble without you, then why don't you start looking for a new job and stop using "the job market is bad" as an excuse? You need a reality check and some humility.
I never said ServiceNow will crumble. I generally don't show humility for people who only care about themselves and their money (talking about the VP). I am just trying to gauge what others think. Everyone is replaceable including the gods. I am just a mere human.
Is the vp your direct manager? I thought servicenow had many layers of leadership? I'm sure you right, you won't get promoted because "you call out the vp on his bullshit" but you wouldn't get promoted anywhere if this is how you perform and work for people. Calling out a vp for anything can be considered insubordination and they can fire you on the spot for that and if or when that happens then you won't be able to get unemployment. It sounds like you have a lot to figure out on a personal level but you still sound pretty unhappy there regardless of a promotion or not so you should start to look for new opportunities and leave on your own terms.
You are over thinking about your job; VP earns 5 times more than you, pls let him do his stuff
Not at SNow.
My VP is also not qualified and a psycho.
Don't be under the impression that he can't fire you
I hope he fires me. He will pretty much lose his KPIs and probably his job if he does. At least I can walk away victorious while fucking him over :)
