Why Worshipping Lord Ram Important in Hinduism?
PM on-site at Google. My technical system design round ended 15 mins early. I started by presenting my interviewer the structure I was going to take, talked about functional and then non functional requirements. Then he started asking me questions about where in the system I would place a particular component. I gave different options and we discussed their trade offs. It seemed quite positive and he did not disagree with me. Just once he nudged me slightly for one of the trade offs and after thinking about it and re-summarizing my thoughts, he seemed to be happy with the answer. Then he wrapped up the interview. I even asked if I should get to the design of the system or talk about the data model, but he didn’t want to and said he has enough information. Needless to say I am puzzled. Is this usually done when someone is doing particularly badly? YoE: 3 TC: 100
You either did really well or you did terribly. Sorry, hard to say which. In my experience, ending early is actually more likely a sign of doing well or doing *exceptionally* badly, and if you didn't feel it was exceptionally bad, you're probably ok. Did you ask questions? Do make sure in system design interviews that you're not delivering a lecture.
Thank you, this is giving me a bit of hope. I did ask a lot of questions in the beginning and the rest of the interview was quite the collaborative dialogue. It felt positive until he wrapped it up. So maybe not all is lost. Fingers crossed
I thought you did fine. Don't fret.
Regardless of how you did, this seems inconsiderate and unprofessional of the interviewer. Consider raising the issue tactfully with your recruiter.
Most probably negative. Reach out to recruiter to reflect about this.
Been thinking about that. Do you have a suggestion how I could formulate it? Don’t want it to sound like a complaint about the interviewer but I do have the feeling that maybe he wasn’t doing interviews very often
Usually when an interviewer is moderately engaged in the proposed system design, he or she will continue to poke at your design, trying to ID your knowledge boundaries.
I’m betting 100% you passed. If you had made a mistake or he had a disagreement, he’d use the full time to understand your thought process and nudge you to a different solution. Ending that early means you’ve solved the problem and discussed everything. Update us with the result!
Will do
Can’t speak to Google, but our Uber guidance was to run the interview such that a candidate we declined left wishing they had qualified, not feeling glad we had turned them down. Ending early wasn’t really a thing, but implied: 1. Bad interviewer. 2. Everything answered, positive signal. 3. So bad that there’s no digging out from this and we’re willing to disregard the training and policy to get out of the room. I could also see a combination of: Interviewer was scheduled at the last minute and really wants to get to a rapidly approaching deadline, needs to go to the bathroom, etc. I’d mention it as a curiosity to the recruiter, but I wouldn’t sit feeling any dread about it.
I do have to admit my interviewer had some communication difficulties. When we started he didn’t really give an introduction and went straight into the problem, and his English wasn’t very smooth. He was still super sweet and positive throughout the interview but he didn’t seem like an experienced interviewer.
Good luck! I hope it works out for you 🥰
