T-Mobile Internal Transfer - SWE

Anyone successfully changed their team at T-Mobile? What’s the process? What if your manager isn’t supportive of the idea? From what I know, they receive an e-mail once you apply to an internal role. Not enjoying my work or team. Feel bored most of the day. Feel like there’s a huge lack of mentorship. I’ve got no one to take advice from or learn. Can get overwhelming! I often feel like I’m always thinking about work but in reality not much gets done. The pressure remains consistent though with unrealistic expectations. Have one or more 10x engineers on the team working on completely different projects with absolutely nothing to do with mine. I feel like my mental health has taken a massive toll in the last few months. TC: $120k YOE: 5

Note: it feels like I’m expected to perform at their level and they have 10+ years of experience but I don’t get the mentorship or support I need.

I think it might not be a good learning environment for you. Maybe we should both continue to LC and transition to big tech

What team are you on? I feel the exact same way and I hate it. One SWE went as far as telling me I can’t ask them anymore questions about a certain system because I’m wasting their time & they have nothing to gain from this, despite me being new

I can’t believe they’d say that! I’d share the team but it would make it too obvious. My issue is that I’m working on a completely different technology that has nothing to do with what all those seniors/principals are working on and they have 0 insights into what I do. They can’t help in anyway. I’ve brought it up with my manager but they think it’s better for me to get done with what I’m doing before I can move to something else. Issue is that this has been dragging on forever and the scope is just expanding daily making things more frustrating.

Your manager will get an email. Have you tried asking for a 1:1 or skip level?

I’ve spoken to skip in the past and he’s a huge advocate of autonomy which really doesn’t help.

+1 for the "are you me?" Comment. It seems like a lot of us are in the same boat. My manager basically said "idgaf"

Internal transfers are a bit of a sh*t show. Your current manager will be notified once you fill in the internal application. Best approach is to find who the hiring manager is for a position that you are interested in and contact them internally and setup a quick informational interview. Be aware that there are unwritten hiring freezes in place at the moment though, so you may, or may not, be able to move at all.

Is the hiring freeze certain? I cleared my onsite interview a month ago now and haven’t received a domain match interview yet. I read a couple weeks back that there were some layoffs due to the merger too
