Curious what the community thinks of the new Mapbox CEO? Is it true there have been large layoffs as well? How is the company outlook in the long term? (Rumors of an IPO?) I have an offer and evaluating if I should join or not - reviews of the company around 2020 were very poor and had a lot of negative to say about the old CEO. #mapbox #maps #PM TC: 185k + illiquid stock
Mapbox took a D round of over $100M in May 2020. I wonder why they didn’t talk about it? Did any existing investors invest in the D?

Toxic work environment pushed top down by new CEO who is ex-AWS and copies its worst facets. Check out the Mapbox specific page. 100% leadership attrition across all functional areas that report into new CEO. Competent people leave in 18 months or less, the ones remaining are hoping for a IPO and will leave next year if it doesn’t happen.
New CEO is just the SVP of Engineering who’s been running the show since 2018. It’s hardly a change in leadership. All the negative reviews you’ve read for the past two years still apply. Don’t join unless you really need to leave your current company and you really can’t find anything else better. I’d only consider joining Mapbox as an engineer, including support engineering and solutions engineering roles. And it’s a particularly great place if you’re early in your technical career. Mapbox gives you freedom to experiment with the incredible products and beef up your technical skills, and you’re surrounded by a community of super smart engineers who are generous with their time in pairing and answering questions. The bottoms-up culture at Mapbox is fantastic; I love my colleagues. Outside of this niche, I think you’re wasting your time and your energy would be better spent working elsewhere. It’s not terrible being a senior engineer at Mapbox either if you don’t mind dealing with fires, but you could make more at most other companies out there. That’s why we’re mostly hiring engineers in Europe, like Minsk.
Do you have any idea how Platform team is? Sounds like actual engineering is good people but, corporate up top sucks? Is that accurate? Asking b/c I'm currently interviewing.
That assessment is accurate. Head of Platform team and a couple of the really good managers quit unfortunately unable to deal with what comes down from the top.
Are you willing to share offer and years of experience? I just started interview process there.
Poor leadership, low stock options, majority of the competent leadership and ICs had left already, but overall financials are good, wouldn’t be surprised if the company IPOs within a year.
