I’d like to share with you my job application journey. I just graduated from my Masters this May, and I have been applying for jobs since Aug 2019. With Covid I thought I would never get a job. I doubted everything, andI put immense pressure on myself to secure any job. I went through lots of interviews and rejections. I documented every application in a google sheet and here are my stats. Whether my stats are good or bad I wanted to share it with those who seem like all is lost. Be hopeful and ride the storm out. Stay positive. Since August 2019. Total Applied: 375 (106 rejected, 200 no answer) Phone Interviews: 69 (37 rejected) Technical Assessment: 32 (23 rejected) Second Technical Assessment: 5 (3 rejected) *not all of them had this stage Onsite Interview: 6 Offers: 3 ( 2 offers rescinded due to Covid) My offers Offer 1: $110k - rescinded (May 1st) Offer 2: $105k - rescinded (May 11th) Offer 3: $140k - accepted (May 21st) Job Sites Used for applications: LinkedIn - 45% (had the worse results for me) Indeed - 20% (had the best results for me) Glassdoor - 20% Ziprecruiter - 10% Angelist- 5% (had fast response times) Almost 10 months since I sent my first application. I went through the highs and lows of the entire process. I accepted my first offer and a week later I was taken away. Luckily I was still interviewing, and secured a second offer. 2 weeks later that offer was rescinded due to Covid. It was a blessing because my last offer was the best offer. I’m sharing this because sometimes things go bad, but be hopeful for the best outcome and it’ll happen. It just might take time. Wishing every luck. Sending positive vibes. Keep pushing. #tech #careers #covid #offer
Can you share the companies that rescinded the offer. Why would they interview if they had to rescind anyway!
Both of them were in smaller startups. I was already in late stages of the interview process before covid peaked, So I’m guessing they didn’t know where they’d be in a month and were still eager to hire.
Can I dm you?
Congratulations
Congratulations!! Great to see hard work paying off and best of luck for your role.
What a refreshing post. Tired to see people just asking for referrals and help without even writing a decent post. I admire your perseverance and maturity about your entire process. Tough times indeed, but as usual people with this type of attitude get rewarded. Congrats.
Congratulations!! And thanks for sharing the numbers. May I ask what your major was in college ? I spent about the same time looking with CS major.
Data Science
Were you trying to look for DS job or all CS?
Congratulations, this effort will go a long way for your future endeavors
That's great that you kept going. I've been looking since late January and I just accepted an offer today so congrats to us! 1 thing I noticed (for learning purposes) is the high rate of rejection at the phone interviews, are you referring to the initial hr screen or something else?
Congrats to you! No the phone interviews were not the initial screen. I would get pass the HR call. Sorry I meant hiring manager/tech lead screen. Guessing my background didn’t suit their teams needs.
Ah ok that makes sense.
I needed this. Thank you for sharing.
Wow that’s a lot of jobs and so much perseverance!! Congratulations on the happy result too. I’d be interested to see what the most common questions where or which interviewer was the worst (and why)!!
Congratulations. Hard work always pay back sooner or later. Thanks for sharing your experience.
