Software engineer bored of my job role. TC~160 YOE 10 years ,computer networking domain with experience directly working with customers as well. Google recruiters have reached out to me and based on my interest and personality they are asking me to interview for TAM or sales eng. Is it worth moving from a software devtest to TAM or sales engineering ? Is the salary competitive for these roles? How’s the stress level ? How long does it take to prepare for these type of roles? I’m in dilemma if I should give it a shot or prepare for a couple of months. Please advise.
You won’t make nearly as much as SWE but you’ll make more than now, and your quality of life is much better than SWE although nooglers always get stuck with all the shit work for first 2 years. Lots of TAMs are ex engineers who got tired of coding
What is quality of life like for TAM..and what do they actually do day to day?
My vote is for sales engineer over TAM. You won’t be doing anymore than handling support as a TAM. Sales engineer you can make some commission with sales and keep a level of coding as part of the role. Just my two cents.
If you go TAM you can ask for a high salary. We are super short on TAMs and it's impacting the business
Any difference in the interview process between sales engineer and TAM ? How are TAMs viewed as overall at google
What is the range of salary for this role ? Is it 150k + ?
TAM and Sales Engineers have similar interview process, but Sales Engineer is more technical and TAM is more program mgmt focused. TAMs are respected at Google more so than at comparable companies, however, the quality of TAMs at Google is pretty high with many coming from very strong backgrounds at previous companies.
SE is not more technical than TAM not sure why you would think that.
I was referring to interview process. I find SE interviews to be more technically focused than the TAM interviews
How many YOE should Target for TAM role? I am in customer facing role with 4 YoE with outgae recovery, PoC ,pre sales support . I want to move to TAM role but not sure if 4 YoE is enough for these companies for TAM role.
Hey OP what did you end up switching into?
Same question. Op did you end up making the move and how was the interview experience ?
