TC ~360K. How can I get paid more?
Product data scientist. Current TC 300-360K, depending upon stock price. STEM PhD. 7 YOE as data scientist/senior data scientist at 2nd tier companies with billions in market capitalization (not FAANG). Should I: Go for a DS manger position at FAANG (more managerial) Or Go the route towards Applied Scientist/Machine learning focused DS at FAANG (more technical/maths) Thoughts?
I would say a third way to do it is moving to a company that pays a lot for analytics/general data scientists. Might be easier than the 2 ways you mentioned depending on what you are good at.
Are you a team lead or manager right now ?
I was a DS manager for a while at a tech start up 1.5 years ago, managing team of 3. I can “function” as a team lead because I come up with new ideas of work to do, size them for financial impact, and then convince people (Eng/product/etc) it’s something we should do, and my ideas get regularly added to annual planning. But no my official title is IC senior product DS L6
Roblox? Their pay is high too How’s your day to day as Product DS? Any ML involved or is it purely analytics
It’s purely experimentation and analytics. But I am fully capable of the ML stuff as well - understanding the math behind it is not a problem for me as my PhD work was very algorithm/optimization heavy. I’ve also built and deployed ML pipelines early in my career at a large tech company but then moved over to product DS. Yeah maybe I’ll take a crack at Roblox

Once you hit $360k for senior, I’m at $430k for senior, it makes more sense to focus on getting promoted to either DS manager, if those aren’t lateral at your company, or staff ds. Preferably it is a diagonal move to a better paying company and higher role. However at this level and pay you want to be careful about bouncing around too much. Moving forward you need to demonstrate ability to drive projects that are fairly high on the priority list of senior leaders and that relationship building takes most people time.

Still trying though - I think most FAANG or L6 positions at FAANG pay a solid 400K or above
