I've seen no shortage of posts about chasing better TC or feeling stuck in a spot because of it. I'm curious how people get to the point where they feel stuck, or what drives chasing TC beyond just wanting to make more money. Not looking for generic things like 'houses are expensive' or 'student loans', those are generic. Really curious about what the personal things were that got you there or keep you going toward. Household TC: $300k ($200k me)
Retirement, and security blanket, obviously
I didn’t chase TC per se, but it definitely changed my lifestyle. I think my expense is 3x compared to college years. Also you want to have the money available when you want to make a change later
I can relate to the expenses, though I find most of my increase is due to one time expenses. Having a good buffer gives such peace of mind and totally makes more things possible.
Financial freedom is the goal. Make as much money as possible, as fast as possible, to achieve what you want for yourself, loved ones, and other causes that drive you without worrying about the next paycheck.
How do you think about the cost/benefit as it impacts work life balance?
Hey sometimes its not about what u gon do with the money but the feeling of winning, doing something very few ppl can do (making millions). Or feeling like u beat the system, if we're talking about saving money/making sweet deals That said, millions also allows u to retire early, raise ur kids full time, security in case of natural disasters/health, security for ur future generations

For me, my quality of life doesn’t change at all regardless of my TC. I live the same as I do as I did in college as far as spending habits, etc. I chase high TC just because it feels good to make $X money, makes me feel valued. But doesn’t really change my overall happiness....
I have similar thoughts about this, though I feel most valued when my coworkers acknowledge my efforts. When it comes to $$ I think of it mostly as how my employer values my role. Not sure if that's really different, but I make enough to not really care about the employer part of the equation. The day my coworkers stop caring what I do is the day I'm out the door.
