Absurdities of the Bay Area π
I started at 70k as a FA in the commodities space in Houston, TX. Worked hard and asked for comp reviews every 6mo based on performance. Got promoted to SFA fairly quickly. Progressed quickly through the company and comp reached 120k in 2years 3mo. Started interviewing aggressively with companies and received offers from AMD, BMC Software, Amazon, Intuit and Microsoft. Surprised to see finance roles don't really get paid all too well but was able to get exactly what I wanted with Microsoft. New TC: 150-155k 2.5YOE Ms Economics Btech ECE Probably gave over 75 interviews (and case studies) across 12 companies to get 5 offers. π I'm honestly not the most technically inclined person but I can answer BQs really well which probably helped a lot. Also had to practice a lot of finance case studies. #interview #finance #microsoft #amazon #fa #sfa #fm #amd #intuit
What do finance interviews look like?
1. Recruiter screener call 2. Call with HM 3. Call with another team member OR finance case study 4. Loop 5. Feedback with recruiter (offer/no offer)
Glad you went with MS.
Would you be able to share your sources for practicing finance case studies?
mostly YouTube: 1. New restaurant financials 2. LTV calcs (for SaaS models) 3. Case studies I fked up previously π 4. CFA prep material 5. Udemy financial modeling course
This is killer, did something similar over 3.5 years.
What type of technical questions did you receive at Amazon? Was it during phone interview or loop?
So I shared a project I worked on and they asked me to breakdown the financial model, the assumptions, how I did my forecasting and budget variance analysis. They were curious to see my thought process and mathematical approach to the situations. They followed up with BQs on how I convinced others of my method vs an alternative
Thank you! This is very helpful. Did you have to take any excel or sql assessment?
How is finance day to day? You dont get bored?
I've automated my work at my current role so I have a lot of free time. I just end up trading at work for myself.
Not in finance but think thatβs amazing lol what examples work have you automated if you donβt mind sharing?
Do you play Dota?
OP can you share how you handle behavior interviews, especially for loads of BQs like Amazon? Preparing this part is difficult to me and I don't know how those principles can related to my work experience.......
STAR approach. I always highlight my top level value add skills in my intro then reference them back in my star approach in each BQ. I always summarize in the end. 2-3min answers per BQ for a 30min interview, 3-5min for a 45min interview I always ask questions in the end like: 1. What is a big need you see me filing in your team with my bg? 2. As a manager, how would you help guide/assist me if I am facing a challenging situation to which I do not know the answer? 3. What is the level of cross functional opportunities this role offers?
Can you share how you were able to land interviews in the first place at FAANG, Microsoft? Did you use any help with resume? I believe that I could use some insights.
I really do want to get a head start in the Tech companies.
Believe it or not I struggled to land a single interview or call before 2yoe. I believe I had a strong profile and solid resume, just not the yoe. The moment I crossed 2yoe, I started getting calls from companies to which I had applied months ago. Amazon was one of them. Then I got in touch with someone on blind who was pip'd from amzn and they helped me with connections across MSFT, Google, and so on. I also had university friends refer me to AMD and having multiple referrals meant the HM was getting multiple emails to interview me. The rest, I connected with ppl on LinkedIn and spoke to whoever took my call.
Great job b! Congrats! Same here went from 130k to 260k in 2.5 years. Long road ahead for us :)
Stocks definitely play a big role. Unfortunately the company I worked for didn't have any stocks, benefits or really much of anything perks wise tbh. I had to grow my N.W. on my own by studying and investing/trading on the side.
