As a Canadian with TN visa eligibility, how do you accurately answer the following questions on job applications knowing that it’s slightly different than an applicant without North American citizenship? 1. Are you legally authorized to work in the U.S.? (No) 2. Will you, now or in the future, require sponsorship for employment in the U.S.? (Yes)
If you have a TN visa: Yes Yes If you don’t have a TN visa: No Yes
Usually you would have to apply for a TN after getting a job right? So unless you already are using the TN? It’s likely the second scenario?
I answer “no” to the second. You do not need employer sponsorship — just take your offer letter and degree to the border. Though it’s nice to have an employer who will pay for pre-approval.
Not actually with fb (old internship account) but yes, this is what I have been telling all prospective employers. Some companies won’t sponsor visas, no reason to disqualify myself from those. People wrongly think “needs sponsorship for a visa” means the same thing as “needs a visa.” It’s not. With the TN, the employer doesn’t need to do anything other than make you an offer. They don’t need, for example, to prove that they couldn’t find a qualified American, which they have to do with H1Bs.
When I started interviewing for US companies (Canadian citizen) I always answered "Can work: no" and "need help: yes" and it has never been an issue at any interview. This is not a trick question that disqualifies you, big companies each see this hundreds of times a year.
