I am an Engineering Manager at Twitter. Due to lack of opportunities for career growth in the company, I decided to research the market and try myself on different interviews. Currently, I have scheduled interview for the Technical Program Manager role with Google. The recruiter started talking about compensation after I passed two pre-screen sessions. They told me that that can’t match my base, and will barely match my total comp. Do you think it is still worth trying and proceed with the interviews? My current base is 200k, overall comp is 430k.
Hey, what level of EM you are with Twitter? Can you share? I know few TPMs at G. I am not sure why recruiter is saying that they can’t match the base. L6 base can go easily up to 220. But yes, with your current TC, G TC can harder to match. But L6 SW managers can go up to 500+ . You need to do good bargain with GSUs.
Get an offer at another company. Google will match if it pays market rate.
Why would you want to switch from EM to TPM?
I want to try something new with hopes that it will accelerate my career growth. Am I too naive?
Probably easier as an engineering manager. Next step above TPM is Group TPM where you are actually manager other TPMS. That could lead to possibly a director of engineering opportunity if cards are played right and in the right company. I personally would stay as an engineering manager.
