Why is Tableau such wank? For example, I'm trying to do a dotted line on a line chart. Sounds simple, like you'd just click a button and it's done, but not in Tableau! There are loads of examples like this. Something that sounds really simple, is actually really convoluted. The steps you need to take are literally insane. I see people with Tableau certifications but imo this is a complete waste of time as the processes are really esoteric and none of it is transferable (unlike learning one programming language for example). You're better off just googling problems as they arise, then totally forgetting about it and freeing up brain space. While it is quite powerful, its terrible UX ruins it. Is there anything released that can do what Tableau does but has better UX? #data #dataanalytics #datascience
Lol 100% a skill issue. Tableau is still far more superior than any other BI tools. Power BI second. There is literally a workaround for every damn thing in Tableau whereas tools such as Quicksight are so cookie cutter. The only thing Tableau doesn’t do well is it freaks out with large amounts of data. Extracts take long time, filters load slowly etc.
Op’s whole point is that making a line chart have a dotted line instead of a solid line shouldn’t be a skill that you need to learn. God help you if you want to show a waterfall style chart.
@king You are missing my whole point. Obviously Tableau can’t cover every use case. Thats unfair to expect from them. They make up for it by providing a workaround for everything. Other tools don’t even do that. Tools like Quicksight are a black box. Use preexisting charts or go die in a ditch.
If you know how to use Tableau properly you have workarounds for almost everything. Its not perfect but its the best BI tool imo.
Exactly!
A workaround for creating a dotted line? There are loads of examples like this
Couldn’t agree more. Power BI is a little better in that you don’t have to use workarounds to do as many basic things but it’s not better enough to be worth switching to it
That doesnt seem like the biggest issue in Tableau. Use it occasionally and not an expert but I think having the right datatype dimension to make certain charts is the most annoying
Oh, I also forgot about the multiple 2000 word blog posts on "How to create a dotted line in Tableau" when you Google it: "Creating a dotted line in Tableau is a lot like the trip I took to South America back in 2011. It was December, and I had just left Ohio..."
ChatGPT solves this 😃
I’ve been using Tableau since 2013, just like Atlassian they don’t give a shit about improving their product because they know they have good market share and their product is sticky.
As a Tableau person I was amazed when I saw how much more data pbi can handle.
As a former Tableau dev: once the founders were out of the picture, the desire to improve the UI/customer experience kind of went out the window, in favor of doing just features that larger enterprise companies wanted. After the Salesforce acquisition, that was even more the case. Used to be a company that would try to respond to feature requests from the community; that dried up. There were certain things that the founders believed didn't make for a good visual, so I think that's what some things are missing out de-emphasized.
SF just want the integration to fix the terrible analytics they had before
Dotted lines are for reference lines not actual lines. Learn about data viz first and up your skills
Sort of the reason why I like quicksight better. You know real fast you can do something or not. It has lots of problems, but making you waste time in convoluted methods is not one of them.
